Aversion to Fire. If the bog mother takes fire damage, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the end of its next turn.

Cloudsense. The bog mother is innately aware of all creatures within and up to 10 feet above the surface of its cloud.

Innate Spellcasting. The bog mother’s innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 18). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will: charm person (as 5th-level spell), detect thoughts, hold person

3/day each: confusion, dimension door, dominate person, fear, hallucinatory terrain, hold monster, hypnotic pattern, telekinesis

Immutable Form. The bog mother is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.

Legendary Resistance (1/day). If the bog mother fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. The bog mother has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. The bog mother can use its Cause Grief. It then makes makes two pseudopod attacks and uses Weight of Sorrow.

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) psychic damage.

Teleport. The bog mother magically teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

Weight of Sorrow (Recharge 5-6). The bog mother targets one creature it can see within 5 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take 44 (8d10) psychic damage and become encumbered until it finishes a short or long rest or until it benefits from the greater restoration or heal spell. Constructs, oozes, plants, and undead succeed on the save automatically.

While encumbered, the target must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from any ability check or attack roll it makes. Each time the target is encumbered beyond the first, the die size increases by one: the d4 becomes a d6, the d6 becomes a d8, and so on until the die becomes a d20, at which point the target becomes unconscious for 1 hour. The effect then ends.

Cause Grief. While a creature is encumbered by sorrow, the bog mother can target that creature with a suggestion spell (DC 18), with the intent on making it linger in its form and grieve.

Legendary Actions

The bog mother can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The bog mother regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Hide. The bog mother can attempt to Hide.

Pseudopod Attack. The bog mother makes a pseudopod attack.

Teleport. The bog mother use its teleport ability.

Description

Contact with a bog mother is an experience not many have ever survived. Malfeasant, hateful, and cold, these emotionless aberrations seek to bring turmoil to any creature unawares as to be caught in its presence.

A bog mother is a spherical entity 1 foot in diameter comprised of an impossibly black matter and devoid of any discernible features. It hovers slightly off the ground beneath a blanket of fog 300 feet in diameter. Innately invisible, the bog mother moves around its environment using the fog as its primary sensory source.

The unnatural fog hides the true body and horror of the creature. When dispelled, the invisibility reveals a tangle of black hair-like threads dancing like smalls snakes beneath the fog.

Attempting to scry on a bog mother fills the viewer's vision with misty fog. The bog mother leaves no trace of its movements and cannot be tracked by non-magical means. The fog spreads through gaps and under doors, heavily obscures anything that it covers completely, but is not affected by wind. The bog mother's true body resides at the center of the cloud and is innately invisible and completely silent.

The invisibility by which the bog mother hides can be dispelled through appropriate magic, DC 18. Magic which allows a creature to see invisibility is capable of seeing the bog mother's true form.

Lair and Lair Actions

A bog mother can be found dwelling in ruinous swamps, forgotten caves, and even urban alleyways. Wherever a bog mother can be found, their presence is sure to bring sorrow and grief. A bog mother's lair is a greater extension of itself and limited to the reach of its fog. Where the fog has lingered, pestilence festers by extension of insect infestations and rot.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the bog mother takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects within the reach of its fog; the bog mother can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • The bog mother casts phantasmal force (no components required) on any number of creatures it can see within 60 feet of it. While maintaining concentration on this effect, the bog mother can’t take other lair actions. If a target succeeds on the saving throw or if the effect ends for it, the target is immune to the bog mother's phantasmal force lair action for the next 24 hours, although such a creature can choose to be affected.
  • Surfaces within 120 feet of the bog mother sprout grasping appendages until initiative count 20 on the round after next. Each creature of the bog mother’s choice that starts its turn within 10 feet of such a surface must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be grapple. Escaping requires a successful DC 15 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check.

Regional Effects

The region contaminated by a bog mother is warped by the magic of the Far Realm, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The land within 6 miles of the bog mother is dominated by swarms of insects. This region is considered infested and should be treated as an Environmental Hazard as detailed in TCoE.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the bog mother are supernaturally fouled. Enemies of the bog mother that drink such water regurgitate it within minutes.

If the bog mother dies, all regional effects fade over the course of 1d6 hours.
