Posted Dec 31, 2021Anyone have any unique cockatrice origin stories for their world? For mine, these creatures can appear in the rare event that an elven farmer dies near their chickens, and the chickens decide to eat the farmer. This transformation occurs as a result of the magic in the blood of the elven farmer, which mutates the chickens. They of course can reproduce sexually as well, with the result being either a chicken egg or a cockatrice live birth (50/50 chance).

Posted Nov 5, 2023DM Note: Running the Cragmaw Castle side quest, and I'm replacing the Grell that appears in Cragmaw Castle with three of these instead (my party is higher level and are more numerous than typical for this adventure, so they need the extra challenge).
The original encounter for C13 was renamed "Haunted Tower" in Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, and which originally featured an owl bear in the Starter Kit module. I am using these creatures as one of the "big bads" that King Groll uses to restrain Gundren Rockseeker, who the party finds petrified to stone (and unless they succeed on a nature check don't know lasts only for 24 hours).
