Hold Breath. While out of water, the octopus can hold its breath for 30 minutes.
Underwater Camouflage. The octopus has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made while underwater.
Water Breathing. The octopus can breathe only underwater.
Tentacles. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 10). Until this grapple ends, the octopus can't use its tentacles on another target.
Ink Cloud (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). A 5-foot-radius cloud of ink extends all around the octopus if it is underwater. The area is heavily obscured for 1 minute, although a significant current can disperse the ink. After releasing the ink, the octopus can use the Dash action as a bonus action.

Posted Mar 23, 2022Raven's and owls are also problematic in this respect.
Thri-keen are "sentient" and cannot talk. cephalapods also can "speak" but not in the conventional way we think of, they use color patterns and very simple sign language, they have even been taught to wave as an action that humans understand.

Posted Mar 23, 2022I'm a fan of the idea of modifying them to live longer and be social as opposed to solitary. They would need guidance though so they didn't have to go through a stone age, or end up killing off all of their predators or food sources from the ocean.

Posted May 8, 2022Why the crap does it have a 4 Strength? Octopi can snap the spines of sharks and can lift 40 times their body weight. If a halfling commoner has 10 Strength, a Small octopus shouldn't be that far behind. ):(

Posted Apr 30, 2023or you could play druid and have shape water plus create or destroy water and use it as a grapple familiar with a dash after each grapple (use the create water spell before a fight bring your octobuddy with you in a bucket or something and then use shape water to throw him to into an enemy allowing him to grapple said enemy, damage him and then get away with its ink dash since it's still submerged in the water you just threw at the enemy), or if you have the create water spell you could use it to create water in an enemies lungs, if your dm allows it that is.
