Traits

Bittersweet. Whenever the alicorice takes 15 points or more of psychic damage, it gains 5 temporary hit points, resistance to psychic damage, and immunity to bludgeoning and piercing damage until the end of its next turn.

Immutable Form. The alicorice is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.

Magic Weapons. The alicorice's weapon attacks are magical.

Actions

Snatch. The alicorice makes a melee attack against a medium or smaller creature. On a hit, the creature is Restrained by a group of the alicorice's strands and moved into the alicorice's space. The creature moves with the alicorice. On each of their turns, affected creatures must roll a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a successful save, the creature is freed and the alicorice takes 10 damage. On a failed save, the creature remains Restrained. If the alicorice takes more than 30 damage in a single hit while a creature is Restrained by it, the creature is released.

Subsume. The alicorice absorbs an unconscious humanoid within 10 feet into its being, stabilizing the creature at 0 HP and moving it adjacent to the alicorice. Subsumed creatures move with the alicorice. Subsumed creatures cannot be healed or take damage. The alicorice heals 1 HP at the start of each of its turns for each creature currently subsumed. For each 24 hours spent subsumed, a creature gains a level of exhaustion, up to level 5. If a creature is subsumed for over 240 hours, it dies and the alicorice's hit point modifier is permanently increased by 10. Creatures killed by subsumption do not leave corpses behind. Dead creatures can not count as subsumed. Subsumed creatures are freed if the alicorice dies.

Multiattack. The alicorice makes two whip attacks, or one whip and one bash attack.

Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 15 ft., 1 target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +8, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: 28 (3d12+8) bludgeoning damage.

Description

A huge mass of black licorice strands woven into a vaguely humanoid form and inscribed with runes, then given life. Alicorices provide a relatively cruelty-free and stable form of golem, and thus are frequently used by rich artificers as guardians. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the material from which they are constructed, the runes used to program alicorices fade over time, causing the creature to gain in independence and intelligence, but fall into a state of incurable, all-encompassing rage. Enraged alicorices torture and kill any humanoids unlucky enough to cross their paths, and have been known to level entire villages to sate their lust for destruction. Truly, licorice is the worst.
