Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d10 + 2) piercing damage.
Breath Weapons (Recharge 5–6). The dragon uses one of the following breath weapons.
Splintering Breath. The dragon exhales a torrent of wooden splinters in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Breath of the forest. The dragon exhales piercings seeds in a 15-foot cone. Each small or larger creature in that area must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving through or have the seeds take root in their body. This effect reduces the creatures speed by half, and gives disadvantage on Dexterity-based attack rolls, Dexterity checks, and Dexterity saving throws for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Lair and Lair Actions
A Bark Dragon’s Lair
Bark Dragons make their lairs almost exclusively deep within grand forests, usually finding an open clearing where they can freely shape the trees and plant life to their liking. The forests that bark dragons like to lair in will usually never be within 100 miles of any large city, unless the inhabitants of the city have a strong respect for nature.
Due to a Bark dragon’s strong connection to nature, the forest surrounding it’s lair will be teeming with an abundance of ever-growing plantlife. It is said that within the lairs of some Bark dragons you are very likely to find various new species of exotic flowers or fruit baring trees.
Small woodland animals, as well as fey creatures, will most likely make their burrows and homes near the lair of a Bark dragon, living off the fruits and plants sprouted by the dragon’s presence. These creatures will most often than not be welcomed by the dragon.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- From any point that the dragon chooses within 120 feet, vines and roots sprout from the ground in a 10-foot-radius. The ground in this area is considered difficult terrain for 1d4 rounds, and any creature within the 10- foot-radius must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained by the vines. The creatures are considered restrained until they or another spend their action attempting to break through the vines (DC 14 strength check). An attack on the vines which deals 14 or more points of damage is also sufficient to break through the vines.
- Within 60 feet of the dragon, a swarm of flying insects gather around up to three creatures of the dragons choice, occupying the same space as them. The swarm bites at the creature dealing 1d4 damage at the start of the creature’s turn for 5 rounds, or until the creature spends an action swatting away the swarm. Any creature that is being swarmed also has disadvantage on all attack rolls due to being distracted by the swarm.
- One creature within 120 feet of the dragon sees a beautiful iridescent flower bloom within 10 feet. They must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be sent into a trance. The creatures speed is reduced to 0, and they can do nothing but stare at the flower until they are either broken from the trance, or succeed a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw at the end of their turn in the initiative order.
Regional Effects
The region containing a legendary bark dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, as well as it’s innate connection to nature, which creates one or more of the following effects:
- All plants within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair grow twice as fast as normal.
- Any creature that enters the forest within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair will be spotted by the local wildlife, which will then notify the bark dragon of their presence. If any of the creatures have an evil alignment, the wildlife in the forest will proceed to throw pine cones and twigs at them from above. On top of this, if the creature has ill intentions towards either the forest or the dragon, all wildlife in the forest will be considered hostile towards them.
- New patches of flowers and plants seem to grow over night within a 3 mile radius of the dragon’s lair. These patches of growth often contain a higher percentage of rare and helpful plants than is considered normal, as well as being void of plants that are harmful to local animals.
If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 10d8 days.
