Traits

Calming Presence. The psychic emanations of a content behelder are delightfully soothing. Any creature picking up the behelder must succeed on a DC 12 Charisma saving throw or be subject to the effects of the Calm Emotions spell for as long as they are holding the behelder. A creature can choose to fail the saving throw if it wishes. Calming Presence does not suppress any charmed conditions originating from the behelder.

Familiar. The behelder can serve another creature as a familiar, forming a telepathic bond with its willing master, provided that the master is at least a 3rd-level spellcaster. While bonded, the master can sense what the behelder senses as log as they are within 1 mile of each other. Harming or failing to hold the behelder once per day will break this bond.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1d4) piercing damage.

Eye Ray. The behelder shoots one of the following magical eye rays at a target it can see within 60 feet of it.

1. Charm Ray. The targeted create must succeed on a DC 12 Charisma saving throw or be charmed by the behelder for 1 hour. Charmed creatures will do their best to pick up and hold the behelder for the duration, and automatically fail their saving throw against the behelder's Calming Presence ability.

2. Fire Ray. The targeted creature must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity Saving Throw or take 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Description

"It wants to be held. That's it. Unlike the rest of its ill-tempered and haughty kin, that truly seems to be the sum of its aspirations." - Count Strahnger

The dreams of a beholder give rise to many strange beings, and the Behelder is no exception. Born amidst a dream of agonizing loneliness, the Behelder manifests into the world with but a single desire: to be held.

No dark twists here - this little guy just really needs a hug. Good luck convincing anyone of that though, the reputation of its close cousins is likely to rot away any chance it ever had of a warm reception. Unlike the rest of its beholder-kin, the behelder cannot hover and must rely on being carried to imitate a fraction of their power.

Whether a baffling creature your players can't help but distrust, or a curiously fitting pet for an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, may the Behelder bring a little joy to your table.

Will somebody please pick it up already?
