Traits

Living Shadow. While in dim light or darkness, the dragon has resistance to damage that isn’t force, psychic, or radiant.

Shadow Form. The dragon can enter a hostile creature’s space and stop there. It can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Necrotic Tempest Aura. The dragon is always at the center of a storm 1d6 + 4 miles in diameter, infused with the essence of death roil with dark clouds, blocking out sunlight, that manifest leering skulls and bone-white lightning. Any creature exposed to the storm that isn’t a construct or an undead must succeed on a DC 24 Constitution saving throw at the end of each minute or take 10 (3d6) necrotic damage.

A creature that dies in a necrotic tempest rises as a skeleton or zombie (your choice) 1d10 minutes later.

A necrotic tempest creates an effect similar to a 9th level darkness extending to it's diameter and leaves crops withered and wells undrinkable for 1d4 days after its passing.

Regeneration. The ancient dark region dragon regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the dragon takes radiant damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the dragon's next turn. The ancient dark region dragon dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 26 (3d10 + 10) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) necrotic damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d6 + 10) slashing damage.

Necrotic Storm (Recharge 5-6)All other creatures within 120 feet of the dragon must each make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 91 (26d6) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A humanoid reduced to 0 hit points by this damage dies, and an undead shadow rises from its corpse and acts immediately after the dragon in the initiative count. The shadow is under the dragon’s control.

Description

Draconic Elementals. Accounts vary on how catastrophic dragons arose, but one point is certain: They seem to have appeared first during the Dawn War after the death of Io. The most common story recounts how a group of dragons, after seeing their deity so utterly destroyed by the power of the primordials, believed that the gods would lose the war. Rather than follow Tiamat or Bahamut, whom they regarded as weak and selfish, these dragons turned to the primordials for leadership. The primordials embraced the defectors with welcome arms, transforming them into manifestations of chaos and destruction.

Necrotic Darkness Given Form. Dark Region Dragons tend to be birthed from dragons of necrotic energy that either live within Eldritch storms or in some cases of particularly powerful ones, in vast clouds of negative energy known as Dark Regions, with in the phlogiston. When these dragons are drawn to a world from frequent eldritch storms, especially necrotic tempests, they often leave not only mass death, but plagues of undeath within their wake.
