Traits

False Appearance. While the wrath remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from swamp water.

Liquid Form. The wrath can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there . It can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch without squeezing.

Corrosive Form. A creature that touches the wrath or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 4 (1d8) acid damage. Any nonmagical weapons made of metal or wood that hits the wrath corrodes. After dealing damage, the weapon takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to damaging roles, If its penalty drops to -5, the weapon is destroyed. Nonmagical ammunition made of metal or wood is destroyed after dealing damage.

Acid Absorption. Whenever the wrath is subjected to acid damage, it takes no damage and instead regains a number of hit points equal to the fire damage dealt.

 

Actions

Multiattack. The wrath makes seven attacks: four with its Slam and three with its Boiling Belch.

SlamMelee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (3d8+3) acid damage.

Boiling Belch. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 20/80 ft., one target. Hit: 48 (8d6) fire damage.

Acid Rain (Recharge 5-6). The wrath contorts the clouds and conjures up a storm. For 20 turn cycles the swamp will rain acid down on the area, dealing 18 (3d6) acid damage at the start of creatures who aren't under cover's turns.

Description

The Wrath of the Boiling Swamps is a being of mystery. Nobody knows how this creature was made, it simply appeared within the Boiling Swamps. Some say he's a vengeful spirit of a man who was burned to death by the Swamp's acidic rain. Others say it was created by a powerful Druid as a means of protecting the Bog Tree. No matter what story you hear of its creation, all you need to know is to stay away from it and its swamps.

Lair and Lair Actions

The Boiling Swamps themselves are the domain of its wrath, but the primary lair of this creature is the area surrounding the Bog Tree.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Wrath of the Boiling Swamps takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Wrath of the Boiling Swamp can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Grasping roots and vines erupt in a 20-foot radius centered on a point on the ground that the wrath can see within 120 feet of it. That area becomes difficult terrain, and each creature there must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be restrained by the roots and vines. A creature can be freed if it or another creature takes an action to make a DC 18 Strength check and succeeds. The roots and vines wilt away when the wrath uses this lair action again or when the Wrath dies.
  • The murky waters of the swamp begin to bubble and boil. Each creature in the swamp waters take 32 (4d8) fire damage on their turns until they get out of the water. After a minute of boiling the water creates a magical fog, giving creatures disadvantage on attack rolls and checks that rely on sight.
  • The wrath summons 2d6 Vine Blights.

Regional Effects

The Boiling Swamps is the legendary Wrath of the Boiling Swamps lair. The regions natural arcana creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The swamps waters boil constantly, dealing 32 (4d8) fire damage to creatures who touch it.
  • Occasionally, the skies rain acid over the swamp, dealing 18 (3d6) acid damage.
  • Large walls of thorns and vines form within 1 mile of the Wrath's lair. The walls are 10-foot-hight, 10-foot-thick, and if a creature is slammed into one, they take 5 (1d4+3) piercing damage.

If the Wrath of the Boiling Swamps dies, these walls of thorns fade over the course of 1d6 days.
