Description
A rat the size of a brown bear, its pack tactics, and ferocity makes it a feared predator in the wild. All rodents are able to find a home in the lair of a Beran Rodere, hence gaining the nickname "Rat King". The Beran Rodere is also an odious collector and will always be found with a large hoard of items it has collected; ranging from rotting carcasses to brilliant gemstones. Due to their affinity for collecting a wide range of valuable objects some have also taken to calling them "Loot Rats" or combining this with their other nickname and dubbing them "Loot Kings".
Lair and Lair Actions
The Lair of a Beran Rodere is home to more than just the larger of the rodent species. Due to the extreme number of rats that call these fetid tunnels home the air is thick with a putrid stench. A Beran Rodere will either find its home with others of its kind or begin its home by digging a small hole and filling it with its collections. These smaller collections quickly grow as others join the efforts of the first and eventually carve out their own underground tunnel system. As the numbers of a lair grow so does its stench which can be smelt by a keen nose from up to a mile away.
- Fetid Fetor: Upon entering the lair, creatures must make a DC 15 Constitution Saving Throw or become Nauseous for 10 minutes. Nauseated creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. Creatures that pass the save are immune to the stench until they leave the lair.
- Volatile Gas: The gas-filled Den is a dangerous place to carry a flame in. Anytime a fire or lightning spell is cast, or a flame is lit, it has a 20% chance of combusting at the origin of the spell or flame. Fire is potent in the lair and does an extra 2d6 damage.
- Festering Filth: Creatures that are knocked prone must make a DC 17 Constitution Saving Throw or be diseased and Nauseous. While diseased you can gain no benefits of a short rest until you take a long rest.
- Eyes and Ears: The rats are everywhere and are alerted to loud noises. Every round of combat has a 25% chance of summoning 1d4 Giant Rats.
