Seal Coat. Whenever the selkie becomes submerged in water, it, along with everything it’s wearing or carrying, turns into a seal. Its game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the seal, but it retains its alignment, personality, proficiency bonus, hit points, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. It also retains all of its skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the seal. If it drops to 0 hit points, it retains its form, even if it is taken out of water. While a seal, the selkie can’t cast spells, and its ability to speak or take any action that requires hands is limited to the capabilities of the seal form. Transforming doesn’t break its concentration on a spell it’s already cast, however, or prevent it from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as call lightning, that it’s already cast.

Magic Resistance. The selkie has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1d4) bludgeoning damage.

Description

Selkies are reclusive fey creatures that are able to turn into a completely different form - a seal - when submerged in water. Most of the time, however, they look like humans clothed in, if nothing else, a seal coat. However, there is sometimes a slight difference between them and humans that one might discern besides the seal coat: some selkies have a bluish-gray tint to their skin, some smell a little too much like fish, and so on.

Selkie Coats. Selkies’ powers aren’t tied to their coats, but their lives are. If a selkie loses its coat somehow (selkies are very protective of them) and a humanoid obtains and returns it, they are obligated by an ancient edict to wed that creature. If the coat is destroyed, however, the selkie dies by the next sunrise if they do not return to their birthplace beneath the waves to produce a new one by a 10-minute ritual.
