Description

The Bonedoggle is a construct built out of random humanoid and animal bones that remains inactive until triggered to attack by some predefined set of circumstances.

Until it is triggered, the bonedoggle looks like a loose pile of bones and rags. Notably, bonedoggles are generally made up of long bones, vertebrae, shoulder blades, pelvises, and ribs. There are usually no skulls, though there are sometimes pieces of lower jaws and teeth.

It is easy to disregard an inactive bonedoggle as a pile of bones left by a large animal or primitive monster. Touching an inactive bonedoggle won't automatically activate it. Usually a bonedoggle is set as a trap that only activates when something specific is touched, moved, or otherwise modified within its environment.

Once animated, the bonedoggle configures itself into the most effective shape it can in order to move and fight, generally using the largest long-bone in its construction as the equivalent of a great club to attack foes.

The bonedoggle attacks the closest foe without consideration for that foe's apparent strength. If two or more foes are equally close, the bonedoggle will attack one at random.

When a bonedoggle is hit with an attack, parts of it will fly off. It will reconfigure itself into the next most effective amalgamation of pieces to continue fighting until it has killed those that triggered it, or it is defeated.
