Training. The basilisk learns one of the following tricks after 10 successful days of training (see description).
-Avert Gaze. The basilisk learns not to make eye contact with other creatures.
-Simple Commands. The basilisk can follow simple commands from its owner and gains any associated actions (Sit, Stay, Come, Roll Over, etc).
Combat Actions. Dodge
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage plus 1 poison damage.
The basilisk gains the following actions as it learns the associated tricks:
Roll Over. The basilisk uses its action to roll onto its back. Once done, the basilisk immediately calms and relaxes. Until the end of its next turn, its condition is indistinguishable from death. Within reason, the basilisk will remain on its back until otherwise commanded, or it gets hungry.
Stay. The basilisk will remain at its current location for up to 8 hours, doing everything it can to avoid harm, while awaiting the party's return. If no party members return in that time, the basilisk will wonder off to find food. A DC 12 Wisdom (Survival) is needed to locate the wayward basilisk.
Description
The baby basilisk is too young to perform actions in combat other than Dodge, but they will retaliate if attacked. When the baby reaches 90 days old, they will grown up and start using the Young Basilisk (HW) stat block, at which point they gain access to a shorter range version of the adult basilisk's Petrifying Gaze ability. It is a good idea to teach them Avert Gaze before they become a Young Basilisk, if you wish to avoid any petrifying mishaps.
Training. A day of training is considered successful if the owner succeeds at a DC 15 Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. A natural 20 on this check counts as 2 successes. On a natural 1, the basilisk bites their owner causing this and the next training session to both count as failures. The owner can attempt this check after they spend one day of downtime or two days of uninterrupted travel training their basilisk.
A basilisk is a reptilian horror whose deadly gaze transforms victims into porous stone. With its strong jaws, the creature consumes this stone, which returns to organic form in its gullet.
In the Humblewood, basilisks only have four legs, rather than the usually eight. They also have shards of glowing crystal growing from their backs. These crystals are a popular commodity in the markets of the Alderheart.
