Keen Eyes. An avoral has the keen eyes of a bird of prey, granting it advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight.
Beast Tongue. The avoral can communicate with animals as though it were constantly under the effects of the spell speak with animals.
Friend of Beasts. No natural animal can ever be compelled to attack a guardinal. If a spell is used to attempt to force the animal to attack the avoral, the spell immediately fails, the spell slot is wasted, and any targets of the spell become immediately hostile towards the creature that cast the spell. Druids using their wildshape class feature and creatures under the effect of the shapechange spell can still attack an avoral while in the form of a natural animal, but creatures under the effect of a polymorph spell will not. Even lycanthropes have trouble attacking guardinals, and must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw in order to do so, or be forced to choose a different target.
Lay on Hands. An avoral's lay on hands functions as the paladin's class feature, but can heal an amount of damage each day equal to its normal hit point maximum.
Innate Spellcasting. The avoral's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
At will: aid, blur, command, detect magic, gust of wind, light, magic circle (self only)
3/day: dimension door, dispel magic, hold person, lightning bolt
Multiattack. The avoral makes two attacks with its claws or with its wings.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6 + 2) slashing damage.
Wings. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d8 + 2) bludgeoning damage.
Fear Aura (1/Day). Creatures within 20 feet of the avoral must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. Creatures who succeed on the save are immune to fear effects from any guardinal for the next 24 hours.
Description
This creature has the body of a tall, muscular human, but with long powerful wings instead of arms. The face is more human, than avian, but the hair resembles a feathery cowl, and the eyes are bright gold. Their legs have strong talons and feathery vanes.
An avoral’s bones are strong but hollow, so even the largest specimens weigh no more than 120 pounds. An avoral is about 7 feet tall. Each of an avoral’s wings has a small hand at the midpoint. When the wings are folded, these appendages are about where human hands would be and can do nearly anything hands can do.
An avoral’s visual acuity is virtually unmatched: It can see detail on objects up to 10 miles away and is said to be able to discern the color of a creature’s eyes at 200 paces.
On the ground, an avoral can lash out with its wings to deliver punishing blows. However, it prefers to meet its foes in the air, where it can employ its talons and make full use of its aerial speed and agility. It can’t make wing attacks while flying, however.
