Description

The Aeternae (ee-turn-ee, like eternal but another e at the end) are horned polycerate (multi-horned) deer from the plane of Arborea who dwell in the forests and planes. They live in large packs and are strong as well as being very temperamental. Those who disturb them, either purposefully or accidentally, find themselves being attacked by the herd almost immediately. In cases where a herd is attacked, after at least 2 members have been slain, the rest of the herd will retreat.

Typically a herd grows to include about 20 mature members maximum before it splits off into 2 smaller groups. Each herd is ruled by the oldest doe of the group who decides when to retreat and where to head. Does can typically give birth to up to 5 fawns a year. Young fawns are kept separate from the rest of the group, protected by the eldest buck, until they have reached maturity at the end of their second year of life.

The Aeternae are infamous for seeking out plant like that goes against the natural beauty of the plane and eating it - including gardens, flowerbeds, vineyards, and more. There are even legends of planar residents waking up to find their homes invaded by the Aeternae, earning the beasts a good deal of animosity among planars, as well as deities.

Hunting parties are often formed on Arborea specifically to hunt these creatures as a result of their destructive and aggressive behavior. Those who have sought to communicate magically with the creatures have found the Aeternae to be rude to those they do not respect and bitter towards those who have killed members of their species.

To earn the respect or a lack of aggression from the Aeternae, they must do a deed for the herd such as removing a predator or destroying a wall. Unfortunately since the Aeternae typically consider any beings who have killed a member of their species to be a predator, the best long term solution is to simply destroy them to control the population.

There have been rumors that an Aeternae in its 7th year of life has their horns turn to pure gold but due to the keratin covering on the outside, it is almost impossible to tell if this is true. Additionally when the Aeternae would hit it's 8th year of life, any gold produced from the horns returns to the standard bone-like material. This gold can be be spotted with a DC 20 Investigation or Nature check.
