Traits

Spider Climb. The arcanamire can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Antimagic Aura. The arcanamire generates a 15-foot-radius sphere of antimagic surrounding it, as in the antimagic field spell.

Telepathy Nullification. The arcanamire can interrupt any telepathic communication used within 120 feet of it, and it can't be surprised by creatures with any form of telepathy.

Actions

Multiattack. The arcanamire can use its Devour Magic action. It then makes two pseudopod attacks.

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is within 5 feet of a wall or an otherwise stable surface, they are restrained by the pseudopod as it pins them against the surface. As an action, the restrained target can make a DC 20 Strength (Athletics) check, releasing them from the pseudopod on a success.

Devour Magic. The arcanamire targets one creature, object, or magical effect within 120 feet. Any spell of 6th level or lower on the target ends. For each spell of 7th level or higher on the target, the ooze must make an Intelligence (Arcana) check. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a successful check, the spell ends. For each level of the spell that is devoured, the arcanamire regains 1d10 hit points.

Reactions

Counterspell. The arcanamire attempts to interrupt a creature within 120 feet that is in the process of casting a spell. If the creature is casting a spell of 6th level or lower, its spell fails and has no effect. If it is casting a spell of 7th level or higher, the arcanamire makes an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the creature's spell fails and has no effect. For each level of the spell that is interrupted, the arcanamire regains 1d10 hit points.

Description

The arcanamire, an ooze with a massive crystalline structure at its core, finds its origins in a similar place to many other seemingly contradictory creatures: the mind of a wizard that was as powerful as he was paranoid. Concerned that there would be threats too large for him to face, where even his magic would fail him, he dedicated years of his life to creating a creature that would be able to nullify any magical threat. The eventual result was the arcanamire, which quickly became known as the bane of all spellcasters. It is said that the original arcanamire was the reason for its creator's eventual downfall, and before long, more and more of the creatures began appearing.

Eventually, it was discovered that the core of an arcanamire acts as a reservoir for the magic that they devour. This led to the arcanamire forming symbiotic relationships with entities of great power, helping to nullify any magical threats in exchange for protection against those that would threaten them.
