Traits

Cloak of Death. Vaal Hazak has an aura of dust and decay wafting around it. Any creature that first enters within 5ft, or begins their turn within 5ft of Vaal Hazak must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or suffer one point of Exhaustion.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Purge (Recharge 6). Vaal Hazak purges all of its necrotic aura into a 20ft radius centered on itself. All creatures in range must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 15d8 Necrotic damage, taking half damage on a success. Those that fail the save also take one point of Exhaustion. This ability can only be used if Vaal Hazak has restored its cloak with its Vampiric Absorption ability.

Vampiric Absorption. Vaal Hazak absorbs all necrotic energy it has discharged, including that from any infected creatures. Vaal Hazak heals 9d6 hit points of damage per creature affected. Any creatures that had taken any points of Exhaustion from Vaal Hazak now remove one level.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Death Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales a necrotic blast in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Any creature that fails its save gains one point of Exhaustion.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Description

Vaal Hazak is a long, slender dragon with several unique physical features. Its body is covered in silver scales, which are obscured by the fleshy red veil that covers most of its body. It possesses a striking double lower jaw, each with a row of extremely long, sharp fangs similar to those of a deep sea fish. It has two bright yellow spots at the sides of its head and two small red eyes. Its toes and wingtips are adorned with sickle-shaped claws. It is similar in size to other more common dragons.

Vaal Hazak lives a solitary lifestyle and does not allow other monsters to encroach upon its territory. While it may not always react to the presence of an adventuring party, it will immediately become aggressive with any threats to its territory it encounters. It is known to bury itself in the piles of bones which litter the environment. Vaal Hazak can collapse, and if left alone while it does so, it will charge up miasma for a powerful attack. Interestingly enough, despite having wings, Vaal Hazak will rarely fly, given the confined caves of the Underdark.

Vaal Hazak is capable of covering its body in a mysterious, life-sapping miasma. As the substance builds up in the body of its victim, it can cause severe weakening of physical strength and resilience. The monster is able to release this miasma more violently by spewing a concentrated stream from its mouth or spreading it around a large area as a noxious cloud. Vaal Hazak also possesses the ability to gather the miasma from affected creatures and adventurers back into its body, healing itself and wounding the victim in the process. Despite its size, its lithe nature allows it to move around at high speeds and even leap considerable distances at prey.
