Traits

Silent Presence. The banshrae cannot physically produce a sound. All Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing made to detect it automatically fail.

Actions

Multiattack. The banshrae makes two dagger attacks and casts muting jinx.

Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4 + 3) piercing damage.

Muting Jinx. The banshrae targets a creature it can see within 30 ft. of it. The target must take a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw, becoming mute for 1 minute on a failed save. While mute, the target is unable to cast spells that require verbal components. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Description

Moving through the dense wilderness with the silence of a phantom, these spies of the Unseelie Court are known as the banshrae. A banshrae can most easily be recognized by its slender limbs and unsettling visage. Their faces are devoid of any features besides a pair of cold, insectile eyes. This frightening appearance coupled with their perpetual quietness makes the banshrae seem otherworldly, even in the Feywilds.

Cursed with Silence. The banshrae did not always possess the appalling form that they take now. The original banshrae were actually a respected family of eladrin entertainers who took pride in their musical talents. During one especially rowdy feast, the performers boasted that they could make anyone smile with their enchanting music. However, the hag queen Baba Yaga had been watching the celebration through her crystal ball and decided to pay a visit disguised as an elderly dryad. She ordered the performers to entertain her, but despite their best efforts, the guest maintained an unyielding scowl. Frustrated and humbled, the performers accused their visitor of being tone deaf. Baba Yaga revealed herself and punished the family with eternal silence for failing to amuse her as well as slandering a guest. Only then did Baba Yaga crack a smile.

Soundless Spies. Rejected by the haughty lords and ladies of the Seelie Court that had formerly cherished their performances, the banshrae turned to the Unseelie Court for protection. Many banshrae became spies for the dour Unseelie fey, although quite a few were made into thralls by the hags they bore an intense resentment towards. These spies use their unearthly noiselessness to listen in on the affairs within the Seelie Court, sometimes discerning valuable secrets from their shadowy hiding places. Particularly malicious fey also employ specialized banshrae kidnappers known as Abductors to capture innocent creatures to be enthralled, sometimes traveling between the Feywilds and Material Plane to do so.

The Banshrae's Envy. Banshrae are creatures consumed by an obsessive envy. They bear an instinctive desire for beauty, but because they are born with such hideous forms, they resent all other beings for any degree of physical beauty. Their faces lack mouths and so they are unable to play their treasured flutes, although the eldest banshrae still keep their old instruments out of self-destructive sentimentality. As a result, banshrae hate the sound of flutes being played and will furiously attempt to kill anyone who blows a flute or similar instrument in their presence.
