Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Flame Resistance.  All plant monsters within 120 feet of the Black Rose Dragon become resistant to fire damage, even if they were vulnerable before.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Flame Rose Breath or not. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite, two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) flame damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Rose Whips. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) slash damage. On hit target must make a DC 16 Strength save or be grappled. The Dragon can not use this attack while targeted is grappled.

Fling. One Large or smaller object held or creature grappled by the kraken is thrown up to 60 feet in a random direction and knocked prone. If a thrown target strikes a solid surface, the target takes 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it was thrown. If the target is thrown at another creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take the same damage and be knocked prone.

Black Rose Storm (Recharge 4-6). The Black Rose Dragon creates a tornado of rose petals and fire that hits all monsters around it. The vortex reaches 30ft centered on the dragon and all creatures must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 20 (6d6) slash damage and 15 (5d6) fire damage and be knocked prone or half as much damage on a successful one and not be knocked prone.

Flame Rose Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales fire and rose petals in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) fire damage and 27 (6d8) magical slash damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Rose Whip Attack. The dragon makes a rose whip attack.

Fling. The dragon makes a fling action.

Black Rose Storm (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Lair and Lair Actions

The Black Rose Dragon lives in the deep forests and Fey wilds. They exist in huge black rose thorn groves that expand out for miles. The dragon is the center of the huge rose construct and after its death the roses wilt and die within one day. The area is surrounded by thorny plants littered with the bones of past victims. Rose bushels and plant monsters thrive in this area eating what ever the dragon does not. Every plant in this entire area is alive and at the command of the Black Rose Dragon.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Rose bushels that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it reaches out to grapple any creature within 30 feet of the bushel. The targeted creature must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pulled to the location of the bushel and be grappled. The creature takes 6 (2d6) piercing damage at the start of its turn while grappled. The creature can redo the strength save at the end of their turn or be freed by having someone cut the vines (AC 13, HP 25, vulnerable to slash).
  • A cloud of rose petals and fire fills a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon chooses within 120 feet of it. The cloud spreads around corners and remains until the dragon dismisses it as an action, uses this lair action again, or dies. The cloud is lightly obscured. Any creature in the cloud when it appears must make on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that ends its turn in the cloud takes 10 (3d6) fire damage.
  • (1/day) The trees of the forest come to the Black Rose Dragons aid. The Black Rose Dragon can call for 2 (1d4) Awakened Tree. These awakened trees are covered in roses that remove their vulnerability to fire damage.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary black rose dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The land within 6 miles of the lair takes twice as long as normal to traverse, since the plants grow thick and twisted, and the forest is filled with thorns and bramble.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the lair are supernaturally fouled. Enemies of the dragon that drink such water regurgitate it within minutes.
  • Plants become completely immune to fire to such a point that the wood of trees will not burn and all fires in the area go out almost instantly, when within 6 miles of the lair.

If the dragon dies, vegetation wilts as it has grown and all other effects fade over 1d10 days.
