Traits

Gift of the Vanir. A vanamare only possesses the power of speech while it remains in Vanaheim. Though its Intelligence score drops to 4 whenever it leaves that realm, it's still capable of comprehending the languages it once spoke.

Lightning Absorption. Whenever the vanamare is subjected to lightning damage, it takes no damage and regains a number of hit points equal to the lightning damage dealt.

Actions

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) thunder damage.

Thunderous Impact (1/Day). Once a day, when the vanamare lands after being airborne for at least 1 minute, it strikes the ground, creating a burst of booming energy that ripples outward from itself. Each creature other than its rider within 30 feet of it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or take 5d6 thunder damage and be knocked prone. A creature that succeeds on its saving throw takes half as much damage and isn’t knocked prone.

Reactions

Retributive Scream. When a vanamare's rider is slain, the vanamare, consumed by grief and fury, summons a terrible storm, producing the effects of a storm of vengeance spell centered on itself, which last until the vanamare dies.

Description

These dark, winged horses of Vanaheim are the favored mounts of the Valkyries. Accustomed to the idyllic and enchanted lands of the Vanir, a vanamare will scarcely consent to depart Vanaheim but for the sake of a divine or blessed hero, counting it a greater honor to bear such a one into battle than to live a life of peaceful contemplation.
