Cursed Visage. When a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the bakekujira and is able to see the bakekujira, the bakekujira can magically force it to make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw, unless the bakekujira is incapacitated.
On a failed saving throw, the creature will be subjected to the bakekujira's curse. Whenever the cursed creature has to make an ability check, attack roll or saving throw, they must roll an additional d6 and subtract that number from the total. The curse lasts a day or until it is lifted by a remove curse spell or similar magic.
Unless surprised, a creature can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If the creature does so, it can’t see the bakekujira until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again. If the creature looks at the bakekujira in the meantime, it must immediately make the save.
Echolocation. The bakekujira can't use its blindsight while deafened.
Keen Hearing. The bakekujira has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing.
Magic Resistance. The bakekujira has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Siege Monster. The bakekujira deals double damage to objects and structures.
Undead Nature. The bakekujira doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.
Multiattack. The bakekujira uses its Haunting Wail. It then makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its tail.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) [piercing] damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or be swallowed by the bakekujira. A swallowed creature has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the bakekujira, and it takes 21 (6d6) necrotic damage at the start of each of the bakekujira's turns. If the bakekujira takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the bakekujira must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the whale. If the bakekujira dies, a swallowed creature can escape from the corpse by using 20 feet of movement, exiting prone.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d6 + 8) [bludgeoning] damage.
Haunting Wail. The bakekujira makes a haunting call. Any living creatures within 120 feet of the bakekujira must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for one minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the bakekujira's Haunting Wail for the next 24 hours.
The bakekujira can take 3 legendary actions, using the options below. It can take only one legendary action at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The bakekujira regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Detect (Costs 1 Action). The bakekujira makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Tail Attack (Costs 1 Action). The bakekujira makes a tail attack.
Parasitic Swarm (Costs 2 Actions). The bakekujira bellows out a swarm of ghostly fish and birds. Each creature within 30 feet of the bakekujira must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 15 (2d6 + 8) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone and pushed up to 30 feet away from the bakekujira.
