Description
A distant relative of wolves, dire wolves, dogs and jackals, Bánæterum (Balinic for Bone Eaters) are large, dog-like carnivores, known to hunt in packs of from six to fifteen individuals. In addition to their large size - typically five feet long, and weighing two to three hundred pounds - they are noteworthy for their large domed skulls with short, powerful jaws. Those jaws are able to crush bones of even large animals such as the Elpendas. For such large animals, Bánæterum are stealthy hunters, able to approach prey very closely without being detected. Usually they will set up an ambush pattern with a screen composed of three quarters of the pack setting up downwind of the intended prey, while the remainder of the pack approach in a skirmish line from upwind to drive the prey towards their companions. Bánæterum inhabit grasslands where the tall grass aids in stealth, and are one of the most feared predators of the Brim Garsa. They normally avoid healthy humans and other sentient races, but will hunt them if injured or otherwise weakened. The Balinic folk of the Brim Garsa say that to flee battle injured is to flee to the jaws of the Bánætere.
