Amphibious. The dragon can breathe air and water.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d6 + 10) slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage.
Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
Breath Weapons (Recharge 5–6). The dragon uses one of the following breath weapons.
Prismatic Breath. The dragon exhales prismatic energy in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw, taking 12 (4d6) acid damage, 12 (4d6) cold damage, 12 (4d6) fire damage, 12 (4d6) force damage, 12 (4d6) lightning damage, 12 (4d6) poison damage, 12 (4d6) psychic damage, and 12 (4d6) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
In addition, if a creature that failed the save has resistance to acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, poison, psychic, or thunder damage, it loses its resistance to that damage type for 1 minute or until the dragon is dead.
Chiaroscuro Breath. The dragon exhales a dual breath of dark and light energy in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 25 Constitution saving throw, taking 32 (7d12) necrotic damage and 32 (7d12) radiant damage or half as much damage on a successful one.
In addition, on a failed save, a creature is blinded and cannot take reactions until the end of the dragon's next turn.
Change Shape. The dragon magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the dragon's choice).
In a new form, the dragon retains its alignment, hit points, Hit Dice, ability to speak, proficiencies, Legendary Resistance, lair actions, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, as well as this action. Its statistics and capabilities are otherwise replaced by those of the new form, except any class features or legendary actions of that form.
Prismatic Deflection. When the dragon is subject to a damage type that it is resistant to, it becomes immune to that damage type before it takes the damage. This immunity lasts until the start of the dragon's next turn.
The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 15 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 17 (2d6 + 10) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.
Prismatic Beams (Costs 3 Actions). The dragon emits beams of arcane energy from its body, each beam having a different color and power. Each creature within 40 feet of the dragon must make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw. For each creature affected, roll a d8 to determine which color beam affects it.
- Red. A creature takes 25 (5d10) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Orange. A creature takes 25 (5d10) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Yellow. A creature takes 25 (5d10) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Green. A creature takes 25 (5d10) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Blue. A creature takes 25 (5d10) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Indigo. On a failed save, a creature is restrained and takes 12 (4d6) force damage at the end of each of its turns. The creature must then make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each its turns, ending the beam's effect on itself on a success. However, if it fails its save three times in a row, the creature drops to 0 hit points and the beam's effect ends on the creature.
- Violet. On a failed save, a creature takes 10 (3d6) thunder damage and 10 (3d6) psychic damage and is deafened and stunned. The creature must then make a Wisdom saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the deafened and stunned conditions from the beam on itself on a success.
- Special. The creature is struck by two beams. Roll twice more, rerolling any 8.
Description
Not belonging to the chromatic, metallic, or gem families, prismatic dragons are their own class of draconic species. These kaleidoscopic creatures typically dwell within more aesthetically pleasing environments such as gem-filled caverns or meadows of verdant fields and crystal clear waters. Unlike most other dragons, prismatic dragons enjoy the company of other peaceful creatures and like to share in the beauty of their homes.
A prismatic dragon has brilliant, multicolored scales that are extremely lustrous and reflective. They are smooth to the touch and have a glassy and polished texture. Prismatic dragons love to keep their scales in pristine condition, so they're almost always clean and shiny. A prismatic dragon's scales also absorb and store heat extremely well, so they are often warm to the touch.
Other than their glass-like, multicolored scales, other features of a prismatic dragon include spiked quills that run from the top of the dragon's head down its back, its monochromic white eyes that gleam like pearls, and its angular head that comes to a sharp point at the front of the face. They also have wings that fade into a cloudy mist at their edges and coral-shaped tails.
Lovers of Beauty. Prismatic dragons adore the complex diversity of the world and large spectra of creatures, locations, magic, and other elements that constitute the world. They believe this variety and complexity are beautiful and should be protected and embraced.
Protectors of Virtue, Friends of the Virtuous. Being lovers of life, prismatic dragons are easy to befriend simply by being benign. They love to socialize with friendly creatures and often get lonely from long periods of isolation, which causes them to seek amiable company whenever they can. A prismatic dragon forms strong friendships and bonds with other good creatures.
Although they are normally gentle and peaceful creatures, prismatic dragons will not hesitate to defend natural environments and friendly creatures from harm and danger. In fact, they pride themselves on preventing destruction, violence, and depravities more than their own hoards.
Prismatic dragons also care the least about their hoards than any of the other true dragons. Although they admire the beauty of their hoards, they will willingly give away portions of their wealth to struggling cities, heroic adventurers, or other causes they deem fit. Their beliefs that beauty should be shared and preserved extend to their own hoards of precious stones and gems as they hate to see other creatures face strife. Unlike other true dragons, prismatic dragons don't get attached to their hoards, so greed is not a weakness their enemies can exploit.
Hoards of Splendor. While prismatic dragons love collecting ores, gems, and other precious stones, their hoards also contain works of artistry and knowledge such as art pieces, books, poems, and musical instruments. For this reason, bards and wizards will often trade their works with prismatic dragons for something from their hoards. Prismatic dragons also love natural beauty and will often grow and maintain a garden around their hoard.
Lair and Lair Actions
A Prismatic Dragon’s Lair
Prismatic dragons most often make their lairs in environments of remarkable beauty where light from the sun, magic, gems, or otherwise can shine through its body and across its hoard, creating a spectacular scene of prismatic brilliance within its home. Such places include montane meadows upon the peaks of mountaintops, expansive caverns with a variety of precious gems and ore, and multicolored coral reefs.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- The dragon absorbs the light energy refracting throughout its lair, healing 30 (6d10) hit points and curing itself of any curse, disease, poison, blindness, or deafness.
- The dragon temporarily enhances the luster of its body, causing light particles to scatter and reflect through and across its body in disorienting patterns. Each creature within 120 feet of the dragon must succeed a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be put under the effects of the confusion spell until the end of its next turn.
- Glass-like crystal shards emerge from all solid surfaces within 80 feet of the dragon. The shards make the area difficult terrain and a creature that moves into or within the area takes 5 (2d4) piercing damage for every 5 feet it travels. The shards shatter and disintegrate on initiative count 20 on the next round, ending these effects.
Regional Effects
The region containing a legendary prismatic dragon’s lair is altered by the dragon's mystical presence and passion for beauty, which creates one or more of the following effects:
- All natural environments within 6 miles of the dragon's lair are adapted to be the pinnacle of its kind as far as the landscape and climate. For example, water may become purified and clean, trees may grow to remarkable heights and grow with exceptional health, and pollution of any kind may be magically destroyed.
- All reflective surfaces within 1 mile of the dragon's lair become extraordinarily clear and clean and shed dim light in a 10-foot radius. Additionally, the dragon can see through these reflective surfaces by looking into gems and precious stones in its lair.
- Magical rainbows appear in the sky frequently within 1 mile of the dragon's lair, even if there aren't proper weather conditions to create them. A creature can make a DC 13 Intelligence (Nature) check to determine that the rainbows are unnatural and a DC 18 Intelligence (Arcana) check to determine that they are magical.
If the dragon dies, these effects end immediately.
