Traits

Spider Climb. The spider can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Web Sense. While in contact with a web, the spider knows the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.

Web Walker. The spider ignores movement restrictions caused by webbing.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage, and the target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, the target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour, even after regaining hit points, and is paralyzed while poisoned in this way.

Reactions

Deflect Attack. The Brood Mother can use her reaction to cause an attack to hit one of the Swarm of Insects (Spiders) clinging to her carapace instead of her.

Panicked Scream (Recharge 5 or 6). Directly after taking damage, The Brood Mother can use her reaction to issue forth a Panicked Scream. Every opponent within 60' must make a DC 14 Con save or suffer 1d4 psychic damage. In addition, any spider in a 200' radius originating from The Brood Mother is considered to be under the effects of a haste until the beginning of The Brood Mother's next turn.

Legendary Actions

The Brood Mother can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. TheBrood Mother regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Consume Corpse (2). The Brood Mother can devour any corpse within 10' to regain 12 (2d10) hp.

Move (1). The Brood Mother can move up to her movement speed.

Shake Swarm (1). The Brood Mother shakes, causing one of the swarms clinging to her carapace to fly onto an enemy up to a range of 20'. The target must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw to avoid having the swarm land in their space. On a success, the swarm instead lands in an unoccupied space within 5' of the target. This Legendary Action is not available if there are no swarms of spiders clinging to her carapace.

Push (1). The Brood Mother uses one of her legs to push another creature up to 10'. Unwilling creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Strength (Athletics) check to avoid being pushed.

Description

The Brood Mother is always found with 1d4 Swarm of Insects (Spiders) clinging to her carapace. While in place, these swarms provide partial cover, conferring a +2 AC bonus to the Brood Mother. This bonus is accounted for in the Brood Mother's AC, and if these swarms of spiders are destroyed, then The Brood Mother's AC becomes 16.

Lair and Lair Actions

Toppling Wall. One of the walls crumbles under the weight of decay after being disturbed by the rigors of combat. Anyone within 10' of the wall that falls must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d8 pts of bludgeoning damage.

Web Garrote. A player chosen at random must make a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or become ensnared in a Web Garrote. The player will lift 10' off of the ground, and will take 4 (1d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). Until this grapple ends, the target can’t breathe, and the ettercap has advantage on attack rolls against it.

Floor Collapse. An area of floor 10' in diameter collapses under the weight of a creature. Anyone standing upon that space must make a DC 12 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. Failing the check results in a 10' fall amongst the debris from the collapsed floor section. Victims will take 4 (1d6) bludgeoning damage from the fall, as well as 7 (2d6) additional bludgeoning damage from the falling debris. Victims will also be prone after taking this fall.
