Crystalline Crust. When a bonded companion is attacked and their aragonite construct is within 30 feet, the construct can use its reaction to increase the companion's AC by 3. This reaction must be taken before determining if the attack hits. This AC increase lasts for 1 minute, until the companion is hit with an attack (including the triggering attack), or until they are farther than 30 feet away from the aragonite construct. This reaction can be taken a number of times per day equal to the proficiency bonus of the bonded companion.
Description
Originally created by Svirfneblin miners, this construct is formed by inviting an elemental spirit into an intricately designed vessel with the intention of assisting others. A creature can earn the favor of the construct and form a magical bond with it. It is said that the first Svirfneblin to do so sought a way to assist adventurers in facing harsh subterranean conditions after acquiring permanent injuries or other disabilities. The two elements that had the best results with this ritual were aragonite and phosphorus which both brought their own unique properties. The phosphor construct has the ability to dazzle pursuers with a radiant glow while the aragonite construct can bolster its companion with a protective coating. Spirits that volunteer for this ritual and establish this bond may break it if they feel mistreated, but they otherwise do their best to assist their companion with tasks not so easily accomplished on their own.
Covalence. A dungeon master can introduce these creatures and/or their creators for the PCs to forge a bond with at their discretion. They may also be chosen as a form for the find familiar spell following all usual rules of the spell.
