Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Melting presence. Any metal within 1 mile of the dragon will act as though it is affected by the heat metal spell.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes four attacks: one with its bite, two with its claws and one with its tail.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 30 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d20 + 10) piercing damage plus 14 (5d10+5) fire damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 10) slashing damage plus +17 Hit: 9 (5d6+4) fire damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 35 ft., one target. Hit: 33 (4d12 + 12) bludgeoning damage, plus +17 Hit: 9 (5d6+4) fire damage.

Swallow. The volcanic dragon makes one bite attack against a Large or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target takes the bite’s damage, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. While swallowed, the creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the dragon, and it takes 56 (20d4) fire damage at the start of each of the dragons turns.

If the dragon takes 60 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, it must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 25 feet of the dragon. If the dragon dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 30 feet of movement.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 3 minutes. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 12 hours.

Incinerating Breath (Recharge 3–6). The dragon exhales fire in a 120-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 128 (30d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Lava Spew (Recharge 4–6). The dragon exhales pure lava in a 50ft radius circle. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 180 (50d6) fire damage on a failed save.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 20 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 38 (17d4 + 10) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Description

The odor of sulfur and pumice surrounds a red dragon, whose swept-back horns and spinal frill define its silhouette. Its beaked snout vents smoke at all times, and its eyes dance with flame when it is angry.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Volcanic Dragon’s Lair

Volcanic dragons live in volcanos or huge volcanic fissures, dwelling in endless heat and tides of molten rock. The creation of volcanic or geothermal activity is the most deadly of the volcanic dragons abilities. Creating searing heat and volcanic gases, as well as cave-ins and rivers of molten metal. wash over a dragon as it sleeps.

With its hoard completely liquidated, a Volcanic dragon spends its time bathing and sleeping in liquid gold. To wake a sleeping volcanic dragon would be a grievous mistake.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Magma erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius geyser. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • A tremor shakes the lair in a 60-foot radius around the dragon. Each creature other than the dragon on the ground in that area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Volcanic gases form a cloud in a 50-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon can see. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. It lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. Each creature that starts its turn in the cloud must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its turn. While poisoned in this way, a creature is incapacitated.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary red dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Small volcanos appear within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair and erupt regularly.
  • Water sources within 3 miles of the lair dry completely.
  • Rocky fissures within 1 miles of the dragon’s lair form portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire, allowing creatures of elemental fire into the world to dwell nearby.
  • All metal within 8 miles of the dragon's lair acts as though effected by the heat metal spell, and any metal within 1 mile of the dragon itself melts completely.

If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d6 years.
