Traits

Magic Resistance. The whitespine has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Acidic Plating. Whenever a creature ends its turn after making a melee attack against the whitespine or touching it in any way, it must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or take 11 (2d10) acid damage, or half as much on a successful save.

Pounce. If the whitespine moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits its claws attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the whitespine can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Keen Smell. The whitespine has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on smell.

Actions

Multiattack. The whitespine makes a Claws attack and a Tail attack. Both attacks cannot be made against the same target.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (4d4 + 5) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (3d4) acid damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (4d6 + 5) piercing damage.

Reactions

Deflect Missiles. The whitespine reduces the damage of a ranged weapon attack that hit it by 18 (1d10+13).

Description

White-spined predators (called whitespines for convenience) are powerful beastlike creatures residing in taiga regions that are plated in thick carapace-like armor. This plating has a special property. While the whitespine lives, and for 1d4 hours after death, its plating is highly acidic. Most scholars agree this is most likely a defense mechanism, but it has been seen using it to its advantage in an assault by slamming its powerful tail into prey to wear it down with the acid. Whitespines are solitary hunters and often attack lone travelers by tracking them and following them for hours before striking in a moment of weakness. Whitespines are only preyed upon by very large monsters that can overcome its acid armor. All attempts to train or domesticate whitespines have ultimately failed.
