Traits

Legendary Resistance (1/day). When Baubrix fails a save, he can choose to succeed instead.

Dual Minds. Baubrix has advantage on saves against being Stunned, Charmed, Frightened, and knocked Unconscious. Additionally, while Baubrix is asleep, he is fully aware of his surroundings, and does not suffer any of the negative effects provided by being Unconscious.

The Urn of Souls. Baubrix has control over the Urn of Souls. While the Urn of Souls is active, Baubrix summons 1d4+1 Lost Souls at the start of each of his turns. Killing Baubrix deactivates the Urn of Souls. Baubrix may sacrifice Lost Souls within 30ft. of him to activate certain abilities (detailed in sheet). Baubrix cannot have more than 15 Lost Souls summoned at once.

Regeneration Through Suffering. At the start of each of his turns, Baubrix may sacrifice a Lost Soul to heal 10 hit points.

Spellcasting. Baubrix is a 9th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). Baubrix has the following spells prepared:
Cantrips (at will): Eldritch Blast, Toll The Dead
1st level (4 slots): Entangle, Inflict Wounds, Shield, Unseen Servant
2nd level (3 slots): Blindness/Deafness, Ray of Enfeeblement, Crown of Madness
3rd level (3 slots): Bestow Curse, Fear, Summon Undead, Vampiric Touch
4th level (2 slots): Phantasmal Killer, Black Tentacles
5th level (1 slot): Arcane Hand, Danse Macabre

Actions

Multiattack. Baubrix can make two attacks per action.

Necrotic Pulse. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 60 ft., 1 target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 4) necrotic damage.

Beckon Souls. Baubrix summons 1d4+1 Lost Souls.

Soul Barrage (Costs 2-4 Lost Souls). Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 60ft., 2-4 targets. Hit: 9 (3d4) necrotic damage.

Soulblade (Costs 4 Lost Souls) Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., 1 target. Hit: 19 (3d8 + 4) necrotic damage. A target hit by this attack must make a DC 10 WIS save or take a point of Exhaustion (up to 3). If Baubrix uses this attack twice in the same turn, he needs to sacrifice additional souls.

Cascading Death (Costs 6 Lost Souls). Baubrix condenses the energy harnessed from souls into a beam of malicious red energy. Each creature within a 10ft. wide and 60ft. long line originating from Baubrix must make a DC 15 DEX save, taking 12 (3d6) necrotic damage plus 10 (2d8) force damage, and the target is Frightened. A creature that succeeds on this save takes half damage, and is not Frightened. A frightened creature may make a DC 15 WIS save on the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success.

Bonus Actions

Tag Out. Baubrix swaps places with a Lost Soul he can see within 30ft. of him.

Ascend Soul. Baubrix sacrifices a certain amount of Lost Souls he can see within 30ft. of him, merging them into a greater creation. The resulting creature is dependent upon the number of souls expended:

  • Soul Dreg (2 Lost Souls)
  • Soul Wraith (4 Lost Souls)
  • Soul Knight (6 Lost Souls)
  • Behemoth of Souls (8 Lost Souls)

The creature acts on it's own initiative, and follows all of Baubrix's commands. Baubrix may not have more than one of each creature summoned at once. Additionally, Baubrix must wait 3 rounds before he can remerge souls into a creature that was slain.

Description

Baubrix was a necromancer of the Wayward Empire that wished to tap into the true potential of necromancy. In his research, he learned about the Urn of Souls, an ancient tower constructed by two forgotten gods, in their attempt to harness the power of souls to control the world. The two gods were struck down by Kruphix, the God of Horizons, destroying the tower in the process.

Baubrix sook out the ruins of the Urn of Souls, and rebuilt it with the aid of the Wayward Empire. The Urn of Souls lacks the power it once had, but it allows Baubrix to cast undead curses across the Shadowglade Isle, further cementing the Wayward Empire's control over the continent.

However, Baubrix's power came at a price. A second creature entered his mind, a fraction of the consciousness belonging one of the long forgotten gods that was sealed away by Kruphix. This being is known as Maltheos, The Chained God. Baubrix now seeks to carry out both the interests of Maltheos and The Wayward Empire. Using the power amassed by the Urn of Souls, Baubrix weakens the chains that hold Maltheos with every day that passes.

Lair and Lair Actions

Baubrix has rebuilt the large tower known as the Urn of Souls, which was destroyed after a colossal battle between Kruphix and two unknown gods. The Urn of Souls isn’t as powerful as it used to be, but it allows for a shroud of undead curses to be placed across the Shadowglade Isle. The effects of these curses are amplified near the Urn of Souls.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Baubrix takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the [monster name] can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Baubrix may merge Lost Souls (See the Action Ascend Soul)
  • Baubrix amplifies the effects of the curses channeled by the Urn of Souls. One creature of his choosing that he can see must make a DC 14 WIS saving throw or become frightened until another Lair Action is taken.
  • Bones jet out of the ground around a point of Baubrix's choosing. Each creature within 10ft. of the point chosen must make a DC 14 DEX save, taking 2d6 piercing on a failed save, and half as much on a successful save. Until another Lair Action is used, that area is difficult terrain.
  • Baubrix summons 1d2 Lost Souls.

Regional Effects

The region containing Baubrix’s lair is layered with undead curses, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Undead or living creatures killed within a mile of the lair are reanimated as undead after 1d4 days.
  • Creatures within a mile of the lair feel an overwhelming feeling of dread.
  • Any holy spells cast by clerics or paladins instantly fails.
  • Creatures within a mile of the lair have disadvantage on WIS saves against the Frightened condition.

If Baubrix dies, these effects fade immediately.
