Description
The bhut (pronounced bah-hoot) is a terrifying creature of deceit and trickery. These monstrous humanoids appear as typical smiling and welcoming humans by day. But come nightfall, the bhuts change, one and all into horrifying creatures to behold, their hair falling out in clumps their skin turning green and stretching over their bones, making them ematiated in appearance, their hands turning into iron-hard claws with blackened nails, their teeth turning into yellowed fangs. Their eyes glow a baleful yellow and their nose become sunken and skull-like.
The worse part of the transformation is that the bhuts instantly become hungry for humanoid flesh as they roam the countryside looking for victims.
Bhuts are often mistaken for undead, especially resembling ghouls by appearance and nature. But these humanoid devouring monsters are not undead but, instead, a cursed humanoid race.
It is speculated that once these creatures may have been of a human species that upset a god of good or evil by dewvouring their own kin in an especially harsh winter and that their entire peoplen were punished to become bhuts.
These extremely tricky creatures do often work with the undead, as their nature and their aura seems to make them not very appetizing to even the hungriest ghoul or vampire. Their appearance lets them "blend in" with the undead, tricking would be priests and others prepared to fight the undead, instead the heroic clerics finding themselves not fighting undead but actual humanoid eating monstersw that are quite alive.
