Skilled Undead. Unlike typical undead, these creatures have retained some of their skill that they possessed in life. They have more action and reaction options than typical undead, and may even retain certain skills.
Boneforged Body. Boneforged skeletons take the maximum result for all of their hit die. Additionally, they enjoy proficiency in Strength and Constitution saving throws.
Skeletal Leadership. These skeletons can command other skeletons, though not through telepathy or verbal communication. Using gestures, they can direct and provide basic leadership to lesser skeletons. Additionally, they can understand such communication from others, undead or otherwise, particularly military command gestures.
Turning Resistance. The skeleton champion has advantage on saving throws made against any effect that would turn undead.
Brute. A melee or thrown weapon deals one extra die of its damage when the skeletal champion hits with it (included in the attack).
Multiattack. The skeleton champion makes two melee attacks, two ranged attacks, or one of each.
Longsword +1. Melee Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage, or 16 (2d10 + 5) slashing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.
Javelin +1 (x6). Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft. and range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) piercing damage.
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Dash Attack. After making the dash action, the skeletal champion may use their bonus action to make an immediate melee or thrown weapon attack. If they do this, they roll their damage twice and take the higher result. They will always attack the most heavily armored target in view with this attack.
Quickdraw. If the skeletal javelin throws a javelin, they may draw a new javelin or their longsword as a bonus action immediately after. They may do this in between the attacks of a multiattack action.
Parry. The skeletal champion adds 3 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the skeletal champion must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.
Trade Blows. The creature sacrifices its typical defensive stance, losing its shield bonus to AC against a single melee attack made against it, declared before the attack's hit roll is made. If they do, they make an immediate attack after the other's attack, making the attack roll at advantage. To do so, the creature must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon or shield.
Shield Shove. The creature may make an immediate reaction after a melee attack is made against it, whether the attack is successful or not, to shove the melee attacker. The target must beat a DC15 Strength saving throw or be pushed back 5ft away from the creature. To do this, the creature must be wielding a shield.
Description
Among the most dangerous varieties of Skeletons, the Skeletal Champion is raised from the corpse of a formidable and skilled martial fighter. These skeletons are uncannily aware, terrifyingly skilled, and implausibly tough for a fleshless combatant. Able to pick up and effectively wield any martial or simple weapon, it is never long before one of these fearsome undead finds magical weapons to their liking, and armor to match, though their undead bindings are incapable of forging a proper attunement to more powerful magical equipment.
These unearthly warriors are hand crafted from the remains of talented martial combatants, utilizing well-toughened bones and specialized hardening and boneforging processes to ensure a quality specimen. Instilled with the fervor and tenacity they once held in life, and ensured to keep hold of the talents in combat they used in life, these undead warriors are not expendable skeletal fodder, but prized weapons and tools. Not quite self aware, but far more skilled and intelligent than virtually any other skeleton, the process of their creation may be costly and require a potently powerful corpse, but the price is well worth the reward.
