Walking Inferno. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the Balefire Herald must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw or take 14 (4d6) fire damage and 14 (4d6) necrotic damage. Undead are immune to this aura. The Balefire Herald sheds bright light in 100 feet and dim light in a further 100 feet. The Balefire Herald has this trait even if it is made to take another form (such as by the polymorph spell or similar magic).
Fire's Hunger Incarnate. A creature dies if reduced to 0 hit points by the Balefire Herald and can’t be revived except by a wish spell.
Unusual Nature. The Balefire Herald doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.
Multiattack. The Balefire Herald makes two Inferno's Grasp attacks, one of which can be replaced by In the Path of Flame, if available.
Inferno's Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 7) necrotic damage and 13 (3d8) fire damage. The target must succeed on a DC 23 Constitution saving throw or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if its hit point maximum is reduced to 0.
In the Path of Flame (Recharge 6). The Balefire Herald points at one creature it can see within 300 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or take 26 (4d12) necrotic damage and 26 (4d12) fire damage and become frightened until the end of the Balefire Herald’s next turn. While frightened in this way, the creature is also paralyzed. If a target’s saving throw is successful, the target is immune to the Balefire Herald’s In the Path of Flame for the next 24 hours.
Description
A hulking pitch-black figure, wreathed in raging flame. The origins of Balefire Heralds are unclear. Sometimes one appears as vanguard of the other burning dead, sometimes it follows in their wake. Some claim they are Nightwalkers corrupted and infused by flame, others claim they are born as they are.
