Supernatural evolution. Depending on the enviroment and the wild magic surges, a blatodea can have different powers related to the kind of insect that was struck by the surge. The following is a list of the possible mutations that a blatodea can have (Note that every mutation should increase the CR by 1, so a blatodea can have 0 or 4):
- Air slash. Mantis or similar insects that turn into a blatodea can generate a powerful range attack with their blades. The claw attack from a blatodea turns into a blade attack with a range of 40/80 feet.
- Wings. Flies, beetles or winged insects that turn into a blatodea gain a 50 feet flying speed, however due to their size they can only fly for 5 turns. After that they need to land and rest for a turn.
- Hard shell. Snails, beetles or similar insects that turn into a blatodea increase their AC to 18.
- Hive mind. Ants, bees, wasp or other social insects that turn into a blatodea have advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the blatodea`s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
Multiattack. The blatodea makes three attacks: two with its claws and one with its bite.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (2d8 + 2) bludgeoning or slashing damage (A mantis would be slashing while scorpion would be bludegeoning), and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). The blatodea has two claws, each of which can grapple only one target.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d10 + 2) piercing damage.
Description
The annomalies known as blatodeas are the result of the supernatural evolution of insects affected by surges of wild magic. They are regular insects (Butterflies, ants, snails) that tried to colonise zones with frecuent surges of wild magic. Because of this, they ended evolving into large monstruosities.
They are mainly carnivores but can feed on plants and even soil. A curiosity is that due to their magical nature, they usually try to feed on magical beings or items, which results in a dangeous situation for any wizards. These creatures can also create colonies like other social insects do, but opposite to bee hives or ant colonies, a blatodea colony is a threat for any nearby village or town.
