False Appearance (Inanimate Form Only). If the Apex Mimic is motionless at the start of combat, it has advantage on its initiative roll. Moreover, if a creature hasn’t observed the mimic move or act, that creature must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern that the mimic is animate.
Creature Sense. The Apex Mimic is aware of the presence of creatures within 5 miles of it that have an Intelligence score of 4 or higher. It knows the distance and direction to each creature, as well as each one’s Intelligence score, but can’t sense anything else about it. A creature protected by a mind blank spell, a nondetection spell, or similar magic can’t be perceived in this manner.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Apex Mimic fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The Apex Mimic makes one Bite attack and two Pseudopod attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) acid damage.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the mimic adheres to the target. A creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained. Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.
Caustic Mist (Recharge 5–6). The mimic sprays a fine mist of acid in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 27 (6d8) acid damage and is blinded until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded.
Spellcasting (Psionics). The Apex Mimic casts one of the following spells, requiring no spell components and using Intelligence as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 18):
At will: detect thoughts
3/day: modify memory
Shapechanger. The Apex Mimic transforms into an inanimate object, a large creature or smaller or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Description
Kin to the common mimic, Apex Mimics are such ingenius natural predators that they can even take the form of living creatures. No longer satisfied by the passive tactics of their kind, these mimics actively seek out their prey with a cunning and insidiousness hereto unseen in their behaviour. Previously only seen in the tainted land of Baragund, they are perfectly adapted to prey on civilised settlements. Some small villages have even been known to fall prey to these creatures, with their population decimated within a few months before the authorities or brave adventurers are able to deal with it. They live to sow distrust and paranoia in their prey, dividing and devouring until their appetite is sated.
