Traits

Chipping Climb. The backsaw bug can use it's bladed limbs to puncture and climb difficult surfaces with advantage on athletics checks, including upside down.

Sawbladed Back. Attempts to grapple this creature unprotected in melee range will result in (1d6+2) slashing damage, regardless if the grapple is a success or failure. Only heavy armor will protect against this damage on a grapple success. Continuing the grapple results in the damage being taken again at the beginning of the grappler's turn. The Sawbladed Back trait does not take effect if the backsaw bug is doing the grappling.

Serrated Claws. If the backsaw bug is successful on a grapple check, they have advantage in maintaining the grapple the following rounds.

Actions

Multiattack. The backsaw bug makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws. It can only use this feature while it is not climbing.

- Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage.

 - Extending Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage and an additional (1d8+3) poison damage if the dice roll on it's attack was 17 - 20. If the poison damage reduces the target to 50% or less hit points, the target  must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 12) or it starts slightly hallucinating and gains the frightened condition for three rounds. The backsaw bug can only use this action while it is not climbing.

Reactions

Blinding Strike. The backsaw bug can use it's Extending Claws action while ignoring the disengage or dodge action once in combat.

Description

"These things scream carnage. They ENJOY hunting and killing. They are as scary as the hells. We call them backsaw bugs, because they have these serrated razor-like blades upon their backs that shift back and forth in a blur when they get agitated. So, yeah, don't try to joyride on one because it would literally saw you in half."

-Darkwoods Dan, ranger and professional monster hunter.

_________________________________________________________

The Backsaw Bug is the monstrous result of the common wheel bug wildly mutating after an arcane portal to the one of the infinite layers of the Abyss infected an area of Mundane Plane landscape with raw dark magic. The portal was so poorly constructed that it collapsed in on itself before anything could be done with it, but it flooded the immediate area with evil arcane energy that randomly corrupted or killed the local wildlife.

The Backsaw Bugs emerged from this disaster and quickly spread as their dark ever evolving mutation finally settled into a permanent and far more sinister biology. These creatures have razor sharp limbs, hooked wings and sawblade-like protrusions that line the backs of their black and brown bodies. These man sized insects are also incredibly violent, going beyond the needs of any natural predator, craving flesh and blood. They are roamers, hunting for both food and sport, making them a great threat in the wilds as they can be needlessly persistent in attacking prey. Fortunately their population is somewhat controlled in that these creatures are solitary in nature, in fact they can be cabalistic, and only produce a few eggs during mating season.
