Traits

Eye of the Observer. One of the Archivist's four eyes grants them heightened visual capabilities.  This eye passively grants them Darkvision within a 120 ft. radius.  Once per day, the Archivist can cast true seeing without the need for material components.

Eye of the Rune Keeper. One of the Archivist's four eyes can read all writing.

Eye of Scribing. One of the Archivist's four eyes can create writing on any surface at the same pace they would write using a quill and ink in their hand while in humanoid form.  The Archivist must know a language in order to write it with the eye of scribing.

Shapechanger. The Archivist can use their action to polymorph into a single humanoid form, or back into their true form. Their statistics and abilities are the same in each form. However, they only have a fly speed in their true form and only have a walking speed in their humanoid form.  Any equipment they are wearing or carrying isn’t transformed. They revert to their true form if they die.

Actions

Spellcasting. The Archivist casts one of the following spells, using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks):

At will: light, mage hand, mending, prestidigitation

3/day each: comprehend languages, detect magic, identify

1/day each: borrowed knowledge, dimension door, dispel magic, locate object, sending, tongues

Bonus Actions

Eye of the Non-combatant. One of the Archivist's four eyes allows them to quickly extricate themself from dangerous situations.  They can cast misty step at will.

Reactions

Shield (1st-Level Spell; 3/Day). When the Archivist is hit by an attack or targeted by a magic missile spell, they call forth an invisible barrier of magical force that protects them. Until the start of their next turn, the Archivist has a +5 bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack, and they takes no damage from magic missile.

Pacifist Aura. Any creature who targets the Archivist with an attack or a harmful spell must first make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 14).  On a failed save, the creature must choose a new target or lose the attack or spell.  If the Archivist would be caught within an area effect which deals damage, the creature initiating said effect must first roll a Wisdom saving throw (DC 10).  On a failed save, the creature must adjust the area effect so the Archivist is excluded.

Description

Although almost never observed in recorded history, an Archivist is a type of sub-beholder created in a similar fashion to a Death Kiss or Gazer.  An archivist is born from the rarest of dreams for an evil abberation .  When a Beholder forms a dreamscape from the history they have observed, a fleeting uncharacteristic desire to guard the memory of the past births an Archivist.

An archivist's body resembles a small grey armored sphere with four eyes of equal size.  Each eye can move across the body's surface freely, and has a uniquely shaped pupil.  The body is surrounded by a shimmering aura of opalescent energy.  When one of the Archivist's eyes is activated, their body resembles a large eye.  The aura takes on the appearance of the pupil in use and becomes opaque.
