Description
A distant relative of the cocktrice, the codrille is a hideous dragon with a sickly green tint to its scales. It has large leathery wings, two clawed talons, a fanged beak, and embedded in its head is a large emerald.
Codrille undergo a strange series of metamorphosis. The egg first hatches and out slithers the codrille in the form of a long, deadly serpent. Anyone who sees the hatchling codrille before it sees them kills it, but death is brought upon one who is seen by the codrille as it slithers out of its shell. It then sprouts legs and becomes a salamander. A creature who sees the young codrille in this form brings death upon it, so it hides in dark places such as tombs and inside the walls of houses. While in this form, the codrille brings misfortune upon all who dwell near it as a way to keep it safe from a deadly gaze. It will whistle in the night causing passersby to flee at the sound if they recognize the cry of the codrille. After seven years in the youngling stage, the codrille grows quickly, sprouts wings, and transforms into a hideous, death bringing dragon.
Once a codrille reaches its adult stage, it flies across the world, spreading plague and disease. Many codrille fly straight towards the abandoned ruins of the Tower of Dagolin. They congregate there and when too many flock around the black tower, disease spreads to the surrounding towns. Every hundred years or so, the city of Galandros sets a bounty on the codrille and sends a large force of hunters, adventurers, healers, mercenaries, and soldiers to the black tower in an attempt to wipe out the vile creatures to spare the city from plague. The emerald on the head of a codrille can fetch 2,000 gold pieces and is a valuable ingrediant in the recipes for many dark diseases. The hide of a codrille, if properly treated by a cleric of a life patron, will protect the wearer from disease.
