Traits

Chromatic Awakening (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If Ancalagon would be reduced to 0 hit points, its current hit point total instead resets to 425 hit points, it recharges its Breath Weapon, and it regains any expended uses of Legendary Resistance. Additionally, Ancalagon can now use the options in the “Mythic Actions” section for 1 hour. Award a party an additional 105,000 XP (210,000 XP total) for defeating Ancalagon after its Chromatic Awakening activates.

Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Ancalagon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Unusual Nature. Ancalagon doesn’t require food or drink.

Disgorge Zombie. As a bonus action, Ancalagon can disgorge a normal zombie, which appears in an unoccupied space within 10 feet of it. The disgorged zombie acts on its own initiative count. After a zombie is disgorged, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, Ancalagon runs out of zombies to disgorge and loses this trait. If Ancalagon still has this trait when it dies, 1d4 normal zombies erupt from its corpse at the start of its next turn. These zombies act on their own initiative count.

Actions

Multiattack. Ancalagon makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) piercing damage plus 13 (2d12) necrotic damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) slashing damage. If the target is a Huge or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 20) and is restrained until this grapple ends. Ancalagon can have only one creature grappled this way at a time.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Fiery Breath Weapon (Recharge 5–6). Ancalagon exhales a blast of energy in a 300-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 78 (12d12) fire damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage.

Thunderous Breath Weapon (Recharge 5–6). Ancalagon exhales a blast of energy in a 300-foot line. Each creature in that area must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 78 (12d12) lightning damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage.

Legendary Actions

Ancalagon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Ancalagon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Attack. Ancalagon makes one Claw or Tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). Ancalagon beats its wings. Each creature within 30 feet of it must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 17 (2d6 + 10) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. Ancalagon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Mythic Actions

If Ancalagon's Chromatic Awakening trait has activated in the last hour, it can use the options below as legendary actions.

Bite. Ancalagon makes one Bite attack.

Chromatic Flare (Costs 2 Actions). Ancalagon flares with elemental energy. Each creature in a 60-foot-radius sphere centered on Ancalagon must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 22 (5d8) fire damage and 22 (5d8) lightning damage

Description

The largest creation of Morgoth's, a massive dragon, of the wingless variant, named Ancalagon the Black. A fearsome creature, towering over most kingdoms and mountains, he wrought destruction upon the plains of Beleriand, before being felled at last by Eärendil, father of Elrond, with a flying ship granted by the Valar, where the body of Ancalagon crushed two mountains underneath.

The body, being too large and monstrous to leave there, was thrown also through the Doors of Night, where later Morgoth's soul would reside. Since then, he has begun work to bring Ancalagon back to the land of the living, but the effects of the Void have left Ancalagon a hollow shell of its former glory, and through dark magics and powerful spells, a new dragon has emerged, to scorch all of Arda now:
