Traits

Imix's Luck (1/Long Rest). Vanifer can call on Imix to alter fate in her favor. When she makes an ability check or a saving throw, she can use this feature to add a d10 to her roll. She can do so after seeing the initial roll but before any of the roll’s effects occur.

Consuming Flame. When Vanifer reduces a hostile creature to 0 hit points, she gains 20 temporary hit points.

Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Vanifer fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Balefire (1/Turn). Imix's flames burn a target down to the soul. Once per turn when Vanifer deals damage to a target with resistance or immunity to fire damage she may choose to deal fire damage as if the target was not resistant or immune.

Barrier of Will. Vanifer adds her charisma modifier to her armor class instead of dexterity. This is already factored into her AC.

Funeral Pyre. When Vanifer drops to 0 hit points, her body is consumed in a flash of fire and smoke. Anything she was wearing or carrying is left behind among ashes.

Spellcasting. The saving throw for Vanifer's spells is DC 20.

Actions

Multiattack. Vanifer may use her Aura of Majesty. She then makes an attack with Tinderstrike. She may then take one other action of her choice.

Aura of Majesty. Each creature of Vanifer's choice within 120 feet of her and aware of her must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become Vanifer's choice of Frightened or Charmed for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to Vanifer's Aura of Majesty for the next 24 hours.

Tinderstrike. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20 ft./60 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d4 + 6) piercing damage, plus 7 (2d6) fire damage. In addition, the target is aged 1d10 years and is cursed as if with an effect of a 9th level bestow curse of Vanifer's choice. If this curse remains after 3 days it can only be dispelled with a wish spell.

Curse of Imix (1/Short Rest). Vanifer places a curse on a target she can see within 30 feet for 1 minute. Attack rolls Vanifer makes against a cursed creature are a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 and she adds 7 damage to each damage roll done against the cursed target.

Flame Blossom (Concentration). Vanifer places a seed of flame in an unoccupied space she can see. If a creature comes into contact with one of the seeds it explodes, all creatures within 20 feet of the bead must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or take 21 (6d6) fire damage, taking half damage on a success. Each turn the bead remains, the damage it deals increases by 1d6. As long as Vanifer remains concentrating on this spell she may place an additional seed as a bonus action. If Vanifer loses concentration or ends the spell, all the seeds explode at once.

Hurl Through Hell (1/Long Rest). When Vanifer hits a creature with an attack, she can instantly transport the target through the lower planes. The creature disappears and hurtles through a nightmare landscape. At the end of Vanifer's next turn, the target returns to the space it previously occupied, or the nearest unoccupied space. If the target is not a fiend, it takes 10d10 psychic damage as it reels from its horrific experience.

Twinned Haste (Concentration, 3/Short Rest). Vanifer casts haste targeting up to two creatures.

Dispel Magic (2/Short Rest). Vanifer casts dispel magic at 8th level.

Scorching Ray. Vanifer casts scorching ray at 5th level.

Reactions

Counterspell (2/Short Rest). Vanifer casts counterspell at 6th level.

The Queen's Veto (1/Short Rest). Vanifer casts counterspell at 9th level without any somatic components.

Shield (4/Day). Vanifer casts shield.

Hellish Rebuke (4/Day). Vanifer casts hellish rebuke at 5th level.

Legendary Actions

Vanifer can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Vanifer regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.

Eye of Tharizdun. Vanifer casts detect magic, detect thoughts, and makes a Wisdom (Perception) check. Vanifer casts both spells at 2nd level and both their effects last until the beginning of her next turn.

Scorching Ray. Vanifer uses her scorching ray action.

Dimension Door. Vanifer casts dimension door at 4th level.

Extinction (1/Round). Vanifer conjures an [Tooltip Not Found], as if with a 5th level conjure elemental spell. She does not need to concentrate to maintain control over the omens. If there are already three or more Omens of Extinction present, she instead consumes three of the omens to cast Meteor Swarm, she may re-roll up to six damage dice of her choice after seeing the results. Vanifer may only use this legendary action once each round.

Lair and Lair Actions

Vanifer is master of heat and flames in her vicinity. She can take lair actions on the Elemental Plane of Fire, or in any elemental fire node (such as the Weeping Colossus in chapter 5). On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Vanifer uses her lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • Any fires in the lair flare up drastically, quadrupling in size (for example, a fire blazing in a 5-foot by 5-foot area expands to a 10-foot by 10-foot area). Pools or streams of lava or other molten material are also affected. Creatures caught in the area of an expanded fire are subject to the normal damage for entering or being in the fire. Creatures caught by a sudden flood of lava must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone, in addition to the normal damage for contact with molten rock.
  • A thick cloud of black, poisonous smoke and burning embers fills a 40-foot-radius sphere within 120 feet of Vanifer, lasting until initiative count 20 of the next round. Creatures and objects within or beyond the smoke are heavily obscured. A creature that enters the cloud of embers for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there takes 10 (3d6) fire damage plus 10 (3d6) poison damage and must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned.
  • A wave of searing heat fills the lair in a 300-foot radius around Vanifer for an instant. Each creature other than Vanifer in the area must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or take 1d8 fire damage. Metal objects in the radius become red hot, as if affected by a 5th level heat metal spell. In addition, there is a fifty percent chance that any container of fluid held or carried by an affected creature (for example, a magic potion) is destroyed.

In addition, Vanifer controls an Ancient Red Dragon, whose mind and personality have been all but shattered by Vanifer's will (as if by a feeblemind and a 9th level dominate monster spells). If the dominate monster effect is dispelled, the dragon becomes hostile towards Vanifer and any of her allies, but continues to only take lair actions. The dragon never chooses to use its legendary resistances or use any other abilities. Each turn on Vanifer's lair action, the dragon flies up to 80 feet and takes one of the following actions:

  • Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales fire in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 91 (26d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) fire damage.
