Traits

Martial Advantage. Once per turn, Baraxus can deal an extra (4d6) damage to a creature it hits with a weapon attack if that creature is within 5 feet of an ally of Baraxus that isn’t incapacitated.

Blackhand's Gaze. Hobgoblins that are within 30 ft of Baraxus are immune to being Charmed.

Actions

Baraxus' Resolve (2/Day). Upon failing a saving throw, Baraxus can choose to succeed it instead.

Multiattack. Baraxus makes 2 Greatsword attacks.

Flaming Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target. Hit:10 (1d12+6) slashing damage, and (1d8+4) fire damage.

Fire Breath. The dragonborn exhales fire in a 15-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking (4d6) fire damage on a failed save, or taking half damage on a successful one.

Commanding Shout (Recharges after a Long Rest). Baraxus shouts out orders bolstering the resolve of all allied Hobgoblins within 30 ft, giving them a temporary bonus of 10 hitpoints, providing that they can hear and understand Baraxus.

Leadership (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). For 1 minute, Baraxus can utter a special command or warning whenever an allied Hobgoblin that it can see within 30 feet of it makes an attack roll or a saving throw. The Hobgoblin can add a d4 to its roll provided it can hear and understand Baraxus. A creature can benefit from only one Leadership die at a time. This effect ends if Baraxus is incapacitated.

Reactions

Parry. Baraxus adds 2 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, he must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.

Description

Baraxus is a Red dragonborn warlord who has black hands and talons, hence his moniker. He was once a soldier serving in a local baron's army, and ascended the ranks in short order due to his natural affinity for tactics and battle. His true goals were revealed once he overthrew the local baron he once served, with a small army of Hobgoblins who he had assumed lordship over by killing their former Warlord. Now Baraxus has assumed control over the baron's castle and the surrounding lands.

Lair and Lair Actions

Baraxus the Blackhand took control over a former baron's estate and transformed it into a well defended motte-and-bailey nestled into the base of a mountain, naming it Blackhand Keep.

Regional Effects of the Blackhand Keep

Blackhand Keep is a well-supplied and fortified base of operations, and the influence over the surrounding lands in a 6-mile radius are obvious.

  • Settlements within 6 miles of Blackhand Keep have less supplies and materials, as they are giving tribute in exchange for protection.
  • Woodland animals are less frequent as they are ruthlessly hunted and regulated to feed an ever-growing army.
  • Other dangerous beasts and humanoids deemed a threat to Blackhand Keep or it's tributaries are hunted down and put to the sword.
  • Hobgoblins loyal to Blackhand Keep are abundant, and patrols are common.
