The Astoni are a strange people and are not widely heard of. They appear as hairy humanoids with rough skin, large nostrils, and no mouth. Astoni do not require food and drink, instead they gather sustenance from inhaling scents from food and pleasant smelling objects. An Astoni's sense of smell is so strong that they can use it just as well as their eyes for a short distance.

Astoni typically live near water sources, even though they do not require drink, and they communicate with each other using sign language. They also wear necklaces that hold a strong perfume or other strong smell, and they seem to use it as a name or symbol. Each Astoni must make their own scent necklace once they reach a certain age, and the necklace is used as an identifier, the scent it creates serving as their name. 

Astoni live in tight knit communities, and are relatively peaceful. However, they have heard of other humanoids and how they are constantly surrounded by war and strife, and so Astoni avoid other people as much as possible. They seem to think of other humanoids as harbringers of doom and misfortune, and will not interact with them without protection and back up. The language barrier between them and other races also presents another problem, and so most other humanoids do not understand the Astoni. 

Not all Astoni avoid other people. There are some who become merchants, selling finely crafted perfumes, soaps and other sweet smelling merchandise. Since they spend so much time around sweet smelling scents, they grow quite plump and successful. They do often need a translator in order to interact with their costumers, and so they sometimes stay hidden, crafting their wares, and collecting their money, but allowing a servant or translator to serve as the face of their store.

Astoni typically live to 80 to 90 years of age.
