Traits

Legendary Resistance (5/Day): If Vandroth fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Unusual Nature. Vandroth doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Rejuvenation. If Vandroth is destroyed but her phylactery remains intact, Vandroth gains a new body in 1d10 days, regaining all her hit points and becoming active again. The new body appears within 5 feet of the phylactery.

Special Equipment. Vandroth has a wand called the Wand of Necrotic Domination and a dagger named Soulreaper.

Magic Resistance. Vandroth has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Spellcasting. Vandroth Farrahd is a 20th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 24, +16 to hit with spell attacks). She has the following spells prepared:

  • Cantrips (at will): chill touch, mage hand, prestidigitation, ray of frost
  • 1st level (4 slots): false life, mage armor, ray of sickness
  • 2nd level (3 slots): blindness/deafness, ray of enfeeblement, scorching ray
  • 3rd level (3 slots): animate dead, bestow curse, vampiric touch
  • 4th level (3 slots): blight, dimension door, greater invisibility
  • 5th level (3 slots): cloudkill, contagion, scrying
  • 6th level (2 slots): circle of death, disintegrate, true seeing
  • 7th level (2 slots): finger of death, plane shift, power word pain
  • 8th level (1 slot): power word stun, sunburst
  • 9th level (1 slot): power word kill
Actions

Multiattack. Vandroth uses Putrefaction (if available), Rotten Fate, or Spellcasting. She then makes two attacks with Soulreaper or one action with the Wand of Necrotic Dominance.

Putrefaction (Recharge 5-6). Vandroth targets a creature within range, causing its flesh to rapidly decay and putrefy. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 8d8 necrotic damage and becomes poisoned for 1 minute as its body rots away. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not poisoned.

Rotten Fate. Vandroth causes necrotic magic to engulf one creature she can see within 120 feet of herself. The target must make a DC 22 Constitution saving throw, taking 96 (8d8 + 60) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A Humanoid killed by this magic rises as a zombie at the start of Vandroth's next turn and acts immediately after Vandroth in the initiative order. The zombie is under Vandroth's control, and she can control a maximum of 6 zombies at a time.

Soulreaper. Melee Weapon Attack: +1 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. 7(1d4 + 5) piercing damage plus 7(2d6) necrotic damage. On a successful hit, if the target is a creature, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take an additional 9(2d8) necrotic damage at the beginning of each of its turns. Immediately after taking this damage on its turn, the target can make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. Until it succeeds on this save, the afflicted target can't regain hit points.

Wand of Necrotic Dominion. Vandroth can use an action to expend charges from the wand to cast one of the following spells:

  • Finger of Death (5 charges)
  • Create Undead (6 charges)
  • Circle of Death (5 charges)
  • Power Word Kill (7 charges)

Additionally, she can use the following wand properties:

Necrotic Overload: Whenever Vandroth casts a spell using the Wand of Necrotic Dominion, she can choose to add a necrotic overload to it. If she does, the spell's damage increases by 1d10 necrotic damage per spell level, but she takes necrotic damage equal to the level of the spell cast.

Spell Absorption: Whenever a spell is cast within 60 feet of Vandroth and she can see it, she can use her reaction to absorb the spell and regain a number of charges to the wand equal to the spell's level (maximum 7 charges).

Undead Resilience: While holding the wand, Vandroth has resistance to necrotic damage and immunity to poison damage.

Additionally, Vandroth can add her proficiency bonus to the spell attack roll or save DC when casting spells from the Wand of Necrotic Dominion thanks to her Wand Mastery ability.

Bonus Actions

Plaguestep: As a bonus action, Vandroth can teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see. Each creature within 5 feet of her starting or ending point must make a DC 23 Constitution saving throw, taking 5d10 poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. This ability can be used once per short rest.

Reactions

Vandroth can take up to two reactions per round but only one per turn.

Reaper's Retaliation. As a reaction when Vandroth is targeted by a spell, she can attempt to counter it with a check using your spellcasting ability.  Vandroth makes a Charisma against a DC equal to 10 + the spell's level. If she succeeds, the enemy's spell is countered, and they take 21(6d6) necrotic damage. If she fails, the enemy's spell takes effect as normal.

Death's Embrace: As a reaction when an enemy within 30 feet of Vandroth reduces an ally to 0 hit points, she can choose to embrace the dying creature's soul, trapping it within her grasp. The creature's body immediately disintegrates into dust, and the soul is trapped within Vandroth's being. Until Vandroth releases the soul, she gains advantage on all attack rolls and ability checks. Additionally, as an action, Vandroth can expend the trapped soul to regain a number of hit points equal to the creature's maximum hit points.

Description

Vandroth Farrahd was once a powerful sorcerer and queen of a great empire, but she delved too deeply into the dark arts of necromancy and paid a terrible price. She became an undead abomination, her once-beautiful features twisted and grotesque, her skin grey and mottled. Her eyes gleam with malevolent intelligence, and her voice is a harsh rasp that sends chills down the spines of even the bravest warriors.

She wears tattered robes that are adorned with ancient symbols of death and decay. In one hand she wields the Wand of Necrotic Dominion, a powerful artifact that channels the forces of death and decay. Her other hand grips the Soulreaper Dagger, a twisted blade that can trap the souls of those she slays. Vandroth is a master of the dark arts, and she wields her powers with deadly precision, striking fear into the hearts of those who dare to stand against her.

Her presence is suffused with a dark aura that seems to drain the life and vitality from everything around her. She is a figure of terror and dread, a living embodiment of the forces of death and decay.

Rumors speak of Vandroth Farrahd has hidden her phylactery, the Heart of Decay, in the deepest, darkest depths of the Underworld. It is said that the Heart of Decay is a small, blackened bone that pulses with a malevolent energy, and that it is kept hidden in a chamber of pure darkness that even the most powerful magic cannot penetrate.

Many have sought to destroy the Heart of Decay, but none have returned from their quests. Some say that Vandroth has placed powerful curses and traps to protect her phylactery, while others claim that the chamber is guarded by hordes of undead creatures that will stop at nothing to defend it.

According to legend, the only way to destroy the Heart of Decay is to use a weapon of pure light, such as a sword forged in the sun's rays, or a holy artifact imbued with divine power. However, even with such a weapon, the task is said to be nearly impossible, as the Heart of Decay is said to be nearly indestructible.

Despite the risks, many brave adventurers and heroes have attempted to find the Heart of Decay and destroy it, hoping to put an end to Vandroth's reign of terror. But whether any have succeeded or not remains a mystery, as none have ever returned to tell the tale.
