Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Abyssal dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Unnatural Nature. The Abyssal dragon doesn't need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, though it can still do all those things if it so chooses.

Actions

Multiattack. The Abyssal dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the Abyssal dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. Fiends have advantage on the saving throw, and demons automatically succeed. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Acid Breath (Recharge 5–6). The Abyssal dragon exhales acid in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Legendary Actions

The Abyssal dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Abyssal dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The Abyssal dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The Abyssal dragon makes a tail attack (see 'actions').

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The Abyssal dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the Abyssal dragon must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The Abyssal dragon can then immediately fly up to half its flying speed.

Description

A dragon corrupted and twisted by the Abyss, an Abyssal dragon, also called a demonic dragon, is one of the most feared entities of the Lower Planes. The stat block presented here is for an adult black Abyssal dragon.

Abyssal Dragon Template

Only a true dragon (a member of the chromatic, metallic, or gem dragon families) can transform into an Abyssal dragon, and only if it is born in the Abyss or remains there for several years. A dracolich can't be turned into an Abyssal dragon, since it loses its draconic nature when it becomes Undead.

When a dragon becomes an Abyssal dragon, it retains its statistics except as described below. The Abyssal dragon might retain or lose any or all of its lair actions or inherit new ones, as the DM sees fit.

Alignment. The Abyssal dragon becomes Chaotic Evil, if it wasn't already.

Unnatural Nature. The Abyssal dragon doesn't need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, though it can still do all those things if it so chooses.

Demonic. The Abyssal dragon gains the Demon tag.

New Action: Frightful Presence. If the Abyssal dragon has a Frightful Presence, demons gain immunity to it, while all other Fiends have advantage on the saving throw.

Resistance. The Abyssal dragon is resistant to Fire, Cold, and Lightning damage. If it has immunity to one or more of those damage types, it doesn't loose that immunity in favor of resistance.

Language. The Abyssal dragon can speak, read, and write Abyssal.
