Traits

Sure-Footed. The Giant Rhinoceros Beetle has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.

Bumbling Flight. The giant beetle must end its turn landed on a surface when it uses its fly speed.

Iridescent. The Giant Rhinoceros Beetle's carapace shimmers, as if producing its own illumination while in an area of bright or dim light. Each creature within 10 feet of the insect must succeed on a DC 10 Wisdom save or become preoccupied by the light bouncing off the insect's carapace, unable to take action that doesn’t involve it during the round it first entered the 10-foot area adjacent to the beetle. Once this property has already taken effect, the affected creature is rendered immune to further distracting effects, including those emanating from another iridescent rhinoceros beetle.

Powerful Build. The giant beetle counts as two sizes larger when determining its carrying capacity and the weight it can push, drag, or lift.

Trample. If the giant rhinoceros beetle moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a gore attack on the same turn, the target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the giant rhinoceros beetle can make one slam attack against it as a bonus action.

Actions

Multiattack. The giant rhinoceros beetle makes one bite attack and one gore attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8 + 6) piercing damage.

Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Description

Giant rhinoceros beetles are the largest species of giant beetles, typically measuring at around 12 ft (3.7 m) in length. They had a single giant horn that extended to a length of 6 feet (1.8 meters). Their shells were usually iridescent or brightly colored.

Iridiscent giant rhinoceros beetle carapace can be used to craft rhino beetle shieldd, a naturally light and tough tower shield, usually of duergar making.

Grown and trained by the Urdunnir dwarves in the cavernous blackness of the Underdark, these giant insects make excellent mounts.
