Description
Once a human weaver, Arachne was cursed by Athena out of jealousy. Arachne claimed to be the best weaver in the realms, now she would be. Becoming queen of the spiders had some unintended side effects; not only did she make the silk she would weave with, she could weave an entirely new heart for herself. As long as this web heart was safe and fed, it would beat in her stead. Her and her brood look out for one another. Soon their hive will take Delphi and then the world.
"Long live the queen."
Lair and Lair Actions
Arachne's Lair
Tapestries sparsely adorn the walls, visages of a city burning, grotesque depictions of creatures melting together, and a woman crying. There is scarcely room to step that isn't covered in thick webbing. The walls vibrate with the pound of a heart beat that only grows louder the further the party travels inside. At the core of this lair is a massive heart made of white fibers and surrounded by a hive. The spiders and their queen will not give up the heart willingly.
Arachne encountered in her lair has a challenge rating of 9
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the lich can take a lair action to cause one of the following magical effects; the lich can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Arachne rolls a d4 and regains a spell slot of that level or lower. If it has no spent spell slots of that level or lower, nothing happens.
- Arachne targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. A crackling cord of negative energy tethers Arachne to the target. Whenever Arachne takes damage, the target must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the lich takes half the damage (rounded down), and the target takes the remaining damage. This tether lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round or until Arachne or the target is no longer in Arachne's lair.
- Arachne targets any number of entrances or exits that she can see causing each one to be sealed by web. The webs can be destroyed by a DC 14 strength check, or by fire, lighting, acid, or force damage.
