Traits

False Appearance. If Bega is motionless and rooted in the ground at the start of combat, it looks just like a dead tree and has advantage on its initiative roll. Moreover, if a creature hasn’t observed the rooted Bega move or act, that creature must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern that the Bega is animated.

Sapping Regeneration. Bega regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it is grappling a creature. If Bega is rooted, it instead regains 20 hit points. If Bega takes fire damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of Begas next turn. Bega dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn’t regenerate.

Surprise Attack. During its first turn, Bega has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn. Any hit Bega scores against a surprised creature is a critical hit.

Actions

Multiattack. Bega makes one Grasping Root attack and two branch attacks.

Branch. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage.

Grasping Root. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one creature not grappled by Bega. Hit: The target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until the grapple ends, the target takes 10 (1d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns. The root has AC 15 and can be severed by dealing 10 or more slashing damage to it on one attack. Cutting the root doesn’t hurt Bega but ends the grapple. If the target is grappled and fails a second ability check against Grasping Root, Bega will pull the creature below its ruptured soil, increasing the damage to 13 (2d8+5), ability check (DC 18) and is now restrained until the grapple ends.

Until the grapple ends, Bega can't use this root on another target. Bega has four roots.

Greedy Bark. Bega chooses five humanoids it can see within 60 feet of it. If the target can see Bega, the target(s) must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be magically charmed while Bega maintains concentration, up to 10 minutes (as if concentrating on a spell). If the humanoid is unaware of Begas presence the target has disadvantage on the saving throw.

The charmed targets are drawn towards Bega from its inviting illusions. On its turn the target must use its action and movement toward the illusion by the most direct route, trying to get within 5 feet of Bega. The target doesn’t avoid opportunity attacks. These illusions can be gold, delicious fruit, magical weapons or whatever the humanoid desires.

Before the target moves into harmful terrain, the target can repeat the saving throw. A charmed target can also repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If the saving throw is successful, the effect ends on it.

A target that successfully saves is immune to Greedy Bark for the next 24 hours.

Bonus Actions

Uproot. Bega can remove itself from its rooted form gaining 30 feet of movement speed.

Rooted. Bega can place itself in the ground reducing its movement speed to 0.

Description

A first glance it is a humongous dead tree, often blending in with others similar as itself. At a closer look it is a monstrous octopus-like tree with roots waving through the ruptured soil is inhabits. It uses its magical abilities to lure in humanoid folk into their deepest greedy desires, allow them to come close before dragging them into the soil sapping their energy and killing them.
