Paralyzing Gaze. If a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the archaeovasilisk and the two of them can see each other, the archaeovasilisk can force the creature to make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw if the archaeovasilisk isn't incapacitated. On a failed save, the creature becomes [Tooltip Not Found].

A creature that isn't surprised can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If it does so, it can't see the archaeovasilisk until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again.

If it looks at the archaeovasilisk in the meantime, it must immediately make the save. If the archaeovasilisk sees its reflection within 30 feet of it in bright light, it mistakes itself for a rival and targets itself with its gaze.

Trample. If the archaeovasilisk takes the Dash action and moves in a straight line, it tramples any creatures in its path. Those creatures can make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw to dive out of the way. Creatures that fail the save take 19 (4d6 + 5)  bludgeoning damage and are knocked prone. Those that succeed on the saving throw take half that amount and are pushed to the side of the archaeovasilisk's path. They are not knocked prone.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (3d6 + 5) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.

Description

The archaeovasilisk is a prehistoric predecessor to the basilisk. Its name, given to it by sages, loosely translates as "ancient basilisk." The archaeovasilisk is just over twice the size of its modern descendant. It has a powerful and poisonous bite, like the basilisk, but its gaze does not turn creatures to stone. Instead, the archaeovasilisk's gaze can paralyze creatures. Once the creature is paralyzed, the archaeovasilisk can devour its prey in leisure.
