Bioluminescent Esca. The Abaeya's esca emits an eerie light, which is very bright to look at but only sheds dim light in a 5ft radius. This light can be seen up to 30ft away in bright light, 100ft away in dim light, and 300ft away in darkness. The Abaeya can turn it on and off at will.

Water Breathing. The Abaeya can breathe only underwater.

Actions

Multiattack: The Abaeya can use its Hypnotic Pulse. It then makes two attacks, one with its Bite and one with its Constrict.

Bite: Melee weapon attack, +5 to hit, reach 5ft, one target. Hit 12(2d8+3) piercing damage.

Constrict: Melee weapon attack, +5 to hit, reach 5ft, one target. Hit 10(2d6+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled(escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the target is Restrained, and the Abaeya can't constrict another target.

Hypnotic Pulse: The Abaeya's esca pulses in a hypnotic rhythm until the start of its next turn. During this time, any creature other than an Abaeya that looks directly at the light must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature becomes Charmed and Incapacitated until it can no longer see the light(even if it isn't pulsing). While Charmed in this way, the creature must use all its movement to move as close to the light as possible. A Charmed target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns or whenever it takes damage, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, it has advantage on saving throws against the Abaeya's Hypnotic Pulse for the next 24 hours.

Description

Abaeya are monstrous eels that prey on a creature's natural tendency to be drawn toward light. Despite being relatively slow in the water, the Abaeya has no problems hunting because it has developed its own method to lure prey closer - a hypnotic pulse. Although Abaeyas are hands-off hunters, they have powerful bodies which can wrap up prey that try to escape and vicious teeth which can rip creatures to shreds. They are primarily found deep underwater in Rhymorra, their lights barely visible at night, but distinguishable from ships.

Hypnotic Lights. An adult Abaeya has a bioluminescent esca growing out of its head which serves two purposes, to lure prey and serve as a beacon to Abaeya young. The young quickly learn to recognize the hypnotic pulse of an adult, as that signals food is on the way.

Cruel Hunters. Abaeya prefer prey that isn't native to the water and will often use their hypnotic abilities to lure unsuspecting animals and people into the water when they come to a lake to drink, fish, or swim. Once they have a creature captivated, they will slowly retreat into deeper water until the creature drowns itself. This is particularly effective against children.

Hatchling Environment. One reason an Abaeya prefers prey that can't breathe underwater is that a drowning creature's lungs are the perfect environment to lay eggs in. The young will start to hatch before the body heat is all gone and will eat their way out of the body in a few days - seeking out the familiar light of their parents. This act sometimes surprises fishermen when they recover a drowned body that has contained Abaeya spawn.
