Iridescent Scales. The Adult Pearl Dragon's scales shimmer and shift in colour as it moves, potentially disorienting observers. Any creature seeking to attack the Dragon must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls against it. Upon success, this roll does not need to be made again.
Amphibious. The Adult Pearl Dragon can breathe both underwater and in air.
Legendary resistance (3/Day). If the Adult Pearl Dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage plus 5 (1d10) lightning damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 7) slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage.
Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
Scalding Jet (Recharge 5–6). The dragon spews boiling water in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 40 (7d10) fire damage and 30 (6d10) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.
Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 10 feet of the dragon must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or take 14 (2d6 + 7) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.
Description
Pearl Dragons are large, sleek and serpentine creatures, resembling a fish in body plan more than a reptile, with iridescent scales running all down its body, and a reflective sheen upon its teeth and claws. While they are not particularly violent creatures, they can swallow large amounts of water at once, boiling it within their own body, and expel it outward as a deadly weapon.
Dwelling around coastlines, Pearl Dragons often build their lairs beneath the water, often amongst or below coral reefs. Failing this, coastal caves will satisfy them well.
Calm, collected and introspective, Pearl Dragons follow the philosophy of one's own body being the only vessel one truly needs to engage in the alchemical and arcane sciences. Through regular meditation, bodily exercise and constant reading, they seek to master themselves, and thus, the world around them, be it through martial prowess, arcane wisdom, social intrigue, or any combination of these. Despite their prideful nature as dragons, on rare occasions they are willing to listen to a mortal, if they believe they can gain from doing so.
Pearl Dragons tend not to keep minions, instead preferring a more solitary life. As with every dragon, these creatures have an insatiable urge to hoard treasure. As one may imagine, pearls are a common find amongst their stashes, and they tend to prefer raw or unprocessed goods as opposed to polished or crafted goods.
In the event that two Pearl Dragons meet, a standoff will likely ensue, as they are highly territorial creatures, but will nonetheless aim to resolve the situation without violence.
Lair and Lair Actions
Pearl Dragons tend to make their homes by the coast, be it underwater or above the surface. Amongst reefs, in underwater caves, or in isolated coastal lagoons is where they will commonly be found. These creatures tend to prefer a smaller quantity of larger chambers over a series of interconnected smaller ones, although there are many hidden escape tunnels littered throughout, should it ever need them. Enjoying the rough beauty of nature over the refined beauty of craft, they act to preserve local landmarks within their lairs as best they can. For instance, a stalagmite cluster in an odd twisting shape would not be crushed like any other dragon would, but would be made into a centrepiece for the chamber. Many pools and access points to water bodies can be found in their lairs, often populated with sea life they find particularly enthralling. Almost every lair contains a large underground water-filled chamber, where they engage in a "dance" of sorts, twirling and curling their serpentine bodies to a rhythm only they hear.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 1 (losing initiative ties), the Adult Pearl Dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Adult Pearl Dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- A thick mist fills the chamber in a 30 foot sphere, centred at a location of the dragon's choosing. Every creature within the mist (aside from the dragon) experiences heavily obscured vision.
- Five jets of water shoot out from small pre-dug tunnels in the floor, rising fifteen feet high. Any creature within 5 feet of one of these jets must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 20 (4d10) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone, or take half as much damage on a successful save and remain standing.
Regional Effects
The region containing a legendary Adult Pearl Dragon’s lair is [enter the effect description], which creates one or more of the following effects:
- All sea life seems to be somewhat iridescent within 4 miles of the dragon's lair.
- Once a day, the dragon can start a downpour above the lair, or clear the skies, depending on the pre-existing weather condition.
- The patch of ocean within 5 miles of the dragon's lair is calm and peaceful.
If the Adult Pearl Dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 4d6 days.
