Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Solar Flare Aura. The area within 1 mile of the Stellar Dragon's lair is subject to the following effects:

  • The gravitational pull in the area is significantly reduced. Creatures and objects weigh half as much, allowing for increased jumping distances and easier movement.
  • The presence of the Stellar Dragon causes the growth of colossal, radiant-infused plants. These giant plants grant advantage to Stealth checks for creatures trying to hide within or behind them.

Sun's Blessing. The Stellar Dragon sheds bright light in a 60-foot radius and dim light for an additional 60 feet. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the dragon takes 15 (2d10 + 4) radiant damage.

Actions

Multiattack. The Stellar Dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes two claw attacks and uses Solar Burst Breath or Bite.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) radiant damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) slashing damage.

Solar Burst Breath (Recharge 5-6). The Stellar Dragon releases a blinding burst of solar energy in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in the cone must make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the end of their next turn. After using Solar Burst Breath, as a Legendary Action, the dragon can choose to detonate the burst on its next turn, causing each creature in a 30-foot radius to make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw, taking 99 (18d10) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Legendary Actions

The Stellar Dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Stellar Dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Claw Attack. The Stellar Dragon makes one claw attack.
  • Solar Burst Detonation (Costs 2 Actions). The Stellar Dragon detonates the Solar Burst Breath, causing radiant damage to creatures in the area as described in the Solar Burst Breath action.
  • Blinding Radiance (Costs 3 Actions). The Stellar Dragon radiates intense light in a 30-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 23 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of their next turn.

Description

Descended from the radiant Sun Dragons and infused with the ferocity of Chromatic Red Dragons, this exceptional red dragon possesses a formidable breath weapon known as Solar Burst Breath. It harnesses the scorching power of the sun, releasing blinding bursts of solar energy that can ignite and damage its foes.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Stellar Dragon's Lair

A Stellar Dragon's lair is a wondrous and mysterious place, often hidden within low mountains or hills. They prefer dwelling in large caves or caverns that provide ample space for their massive forms. However, these caves are not ordinary; they are intricately intertwined with the vastness of space itself. The lair can exist both in the material plane and the vast vacuum of the cosmos, blurring the boundaries between realms.

Environmental Hazards:

  1. Celestial Rifts: Within the lair, rifts in space appear as shimmering portals that connect the physical realm to the cosmic expanse. These rifts emit radiant energy and gravitational disturbances. Getting too close to these rifts can cause unpredictable effects, such as gravitational shifts, temporary disorientation, or bursts of radiant energy. Careless adventurers might find themselves pulled into the void or blasted by cosmic forces.

  2. Anti-Gravity Pockets: The lair is filled with areas where gravity is significantly reduced or completely nullified. These anti-gravity pockets make movement challenging, causing adventurers to float or drift aimlessly. Without proper preparation or magical assistance, traversing these areas can be disorienting and lead to potentially dangerous situations.

  3. Living Plant Maze: The caves within the lair are adorned with lush plant life that thrives in the dragon's celestial presence. However, these plants are not merely decorative; they are part of the lair's intricate defense system. The plants have a symbiotic relationship with the dragon, acting as guardians and traps. Vines and tendrils snake across the cavern, creating a dense maze that can ensnare intruders, hinder movement, or even attack with thorns and poisonous sap.

  4. Cosmic Flares: The lair occasionally experiences cosmic flares, intense bursts of radiant energy that surge through the cave systems. These flares illuminate the area with blinding light and scorching heat. Adventurers caught in the path of a cosmic flare may suffer radiant damage, temporary blindness, or have their protective magical effects temporarily nullified.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Solar Dragon takes a lair action to harness the power of its radiant lair. The dragon can choose one of the following effects. The lair actions can't be used again until the dragon's next turn.

  • Radiant Surge: Brilliant light erupts from the ground in a 30-foot radius centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet. Each creature in that area must make a DC 23 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Luminous Growth: The radiant-infused plants within the lair become animated and hostile. Two giant plant creatures (as per the Vine Blight stat block) sprout from the ground in unoccupied spaces within 60 feet of the dragon. These plant creatures are under the dragon's control and act immediately after it in the initiative order. They remain until they are destroyed or the dragon uses this lair action again.
  • Celestial Veil: The lair becomes filled with swirling celestial energy, causing the area to be heavily obscured in magical mist and radiant light. Any creature other than the dragon that enters or starts its turn in the area must make a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or be blinded until the start of their next turn.

Regional Effects

The region surrounding the Solar Dragon's lair is altered by its presence, which creates the following effects:

  • Celestial Aura: The sun shines brighter in a 6-mile radius around the lair. During the daytime, sunlight within this area is considered magical. Spells that require sunlight or are affected by sunlight are heightened and empowered while in this region.
  • Luminous Energy: The radiant energy of the lair infuses the area, making it more difficult for creatures aligned with darkness or necrotic energy. Undead creatures and creatures with the fiend or undead subtype have disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws against spells while in the region.
  • Energized Flora: The plants within the lair and surrounding area grow vibrant and infused with radiant energy. They become animated and gain a limited sentience, acting as guardians for the lair. Any plant creature within the area gains a +2 bonus to its attack rolls and damage rolls.
