Living Shadow. While in dim light or darkness, Blightwing is resistant to damage that isn't force, psychic, or radiant.
Shadow Stealth. While in dim light or darkness, Blightwing can take the Hide action as a bonus action.
Amphibious. Blightwing can breathe air and water.
Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Blightwing fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Nightmare Incarnate (Mythic Trait; Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If Blightwing is reduced to 0 hit points, it does not die or fall unconcious. Instead, it regains 500 hit points, as the body of the dragon breaks open, and Blightwing's true form steps out of the shell, becoming The Nightmare Incarnate and automatically using its Dread Presence and regaining its Shadow Breath if it didn't have it back already. In this form, Blightwing is a Huge Undead, and it gains access to its Mythic Actions.
Multiattack. Blightwing can use its Dread Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its Bite, one with its Claw, and one with its Tail.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (2d12 + 10) piercing damage plus 19 (3d12) necrotic damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 10) slashing damage. If the target is a Huge or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 20) and is restrained until this grapple ends. Blightwing can have only one creature grappled this way at a time.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (2d12 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 27 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Dread Presence. Blightwing's presence can instill true terror in its foes. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or suffer 18 (3d8) psychic damage and become frightened for 1 minute. On a success, the creature takes half damage and is not frightened. A creature that is frightened of Blightwing may make the save again at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success.
Shadow Breath (Recharge 5–6). Blightwing exhales darkness in a 90-foot line that is 10 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw, taking 71 (11d12) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Blightwing can take 5 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Blightwing regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Doom Foretold (Costs 2 Actions). Blightwing forces one creature it can see to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 23). On a failure, the creature suffers 49 (14d6) psychic damage and becomes frightened until the end of their next turn as horrific visions of their possible future flash before them. On a success, they take half damage and are not frightened.
Purge the Light. Blightwing sucks the light out of all living creatures in its lair, forcing them to make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the creature is blinded for 1 minute. On a success, the creature is not blinded. This condition can be cured with lesser restoration or similar magic.
Great Upheaval. Blightwing beats its wings, forcing every creature within 60 feet of it to succeed on a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 26 (4d12) bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. On a success, the creature takes half damage and is not knocked prone.
If Blightwing's mythic trait is active, it can use one of the options below as legendary actions.
Behold the Abyss (Costs 3 Actions). Blightwing opens its mouth to reveal the Twilight Abyss. A creature Blightwing can see within 120 feet must make a DC 20 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the creature becomes paralyzed, hypnotized by the infinity of the Abyss. This creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success, or a lesser restoration spell or similar magic can also end the effect. If a creature fails this saving throw 5 times without the effect being cured, they must make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature is at the mercy of the Twilight Abyss, and charmed to Blightwing indefinitely. The only way to cure a creature of this effect is with the wish or divine intervention. After succeeding on a saving throw, the creature is immune to this effect for the next 24 hours.
Tear Through Space. Blightwing tears holes in space, unleashing five Claw attacks on any creature within 60 feet of it.
Description
Blightwing is the ultimate expression of Aurgloroasa's vision: undeath incarnate. It has shed the beliefs that Aurgloroasa once clung to in reverence to Tiamat, Mother of Evil Dragons, and has been reborn as a being of pure necrotic energy, bent on the destruction of all that lives. It is no longer the Sibilant Shade, it is Blightwing, the Nightmare Ascendant.
Blightwing appears as a true behemoth of undeath. A twisted dracolich form, black smoke billows from beneath its scales, its wings are bone, and tendrils of darkness stitch what little flesh remains together. It's piercing purple eyes stare through the hearts of any who see them.
Blightwing as a Mythic Encounter
Blightwing is powerful, but if it is pushed into a corner, it will shed any notion of protection and use Nightmare Incarnate, revealing its true form. In this form, Blightwing can use its Mythic Actions as part of its Legendary Actions.
Read or paraphrase the following text when Blightwing uses its Nightmare Incarnate trait:
The draconic form crumples away before you, as if it were the cocoon of an insect, and stepping out you see a smaller figure emerge. A 13-foot tall, feminine, humanoid creature of pure darkness stands before you, with shadowy dragon wings sprouting from its back, clawed, reptilian hands and feet, and a jagged crown of horns growing out of its head. Its glowing, pinprick eyes scan over the battlefield, as it inhales the cold air, as if for the first time.
Lair and Lair Actions
In her transformation into Blightwing, Aurgloroasa fused with the Twilight Abyss and the Domain of Somnoria, making herself a living Domain of Dread, spreading its influence and corrupting all that Blightwing touches.
Endless Torment. The Twilight Abyss now follows Blightwing wherever it travels, corrupting all that lives along the way. No plant within 50 miles of Blightwing grows, instead withering and rotting. Blightwing is also aware of all living creatures that enter within 50 miles of it.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Blightwing can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects. It can't use the same effect two rounds in a row.
- Flesh of Somnoria. Blightwing creates a fissure of necrotic shadow at a point it can see within 120 feet, and a 30-foot long black tendril emerges from it. The tendril is considered a Gargantuan Undead, has a speed of 0, an AC of 15, and 30 hit points. The tendrils may only take one action per turn, and they may only use Blightwing's Tail Attack action. The tendrils roll their own initiative with a +5. This action has a reach of 30 feet and deals necrotic damage when used by a tendril. Only 5 tendrils may be active at once. If a sixth tendril is summoned, the tendril with the lowest hit points disappears.
- Phantasmal Shift. Blightwing teleports up to 30 feet to a new location. If it is within 10 feet of a hostile creature, it may also take a Claw attack as a reaction.
- Tyrant In Black. Blightwing gains resistance to radiant damage, and any creatures within 30 feet of it gain necrotic vulnerability until the next lair action. If a creature has necrotic resistance, it loses that resistance instead of gaining necrotic vulnerability. Dark energy creates a cloak of shadow across Blightwing's form, causing dim light within 30 feet of it to turn into darkness, and bright light within 60 feet of it to become dim light.
Regional Effects
The region surrounding the Twilight Abyss is corrupted by Blightwing's influence, turning gray and necrotic, and creating one or more of the following effects:
- Undead within 50 miles of Blightwing have advantage against abilities or spells that turn undead.
- Any living creature within 50 miles of Blightwing suffers from the Despair of the Shadowfell. Every hour, they must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, rolling on the Shadowfell Despair table in the Dungeon Master's Guide on a failure.
If Blightwing is slain, the Twilight Abyss vanishes, its Darklord destroyed, it returns to the Shadowfell until the Dark Powers have need of it again. The effects the Twilight Abyss has on vegetation, living creatures and undead fade after 1d10 days.
