Traits

Wailing Confusion. If the Wailing Echo has any images created by Echos of Wailing in line of sight, it can cast spells and features from the position of any of them.

Spellcasting. The Wailing Echo is a 7-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). The Wailing Echo has following wizard spells prepared:
Cantrips (at will): Mage Hand, Minor Illusion
1st level (4 slots): Mage Armor, Magic Missile
2nd level (3 slots): Invisibility, Mirror Image
3rd level (3 slots): Vampiric Touch
4th level (1 slots): Greater Invisibility

Actions

Multiattack. The Wailing Echo makes two Shadow Bolt attacks.

Shadow Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, range 60 ft., 1 target. Hit: 14 (4d6) necrotic damage.

Bonus Actions

Echoes of Wailing (1/Day). The Wailing Echo can create 2d4 perfect images of itself at any location within 60 ft. of its current location as a bonus action. The images have the same armor class as the Wailing Echo but only have 1 hit point and cannot move or attack. When an image takes damage, it is destroyed, and the attacker takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage.

Reactions

Shadow Shift. When the Wailing Echo takes damage, it can use an image created with Echoes of Wailing to avoid the damage and redirect the attack to the created image instead. The attacker then takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage, and the image is destroyed. The Wailing Echo can then swap places with one of its remaining images.

Description

The Wailing Echo is a gruesome and haunting phenomenon that arises from the darkest corners of the realm of death. These are souls who suffered some terrible imperfection in their lives - perhaps unrequited love, a broken promise, or an unfulfilled revenge. After their death, these souls find no rest, their wailing echoes across the boundaries of the living and the dead, culminating in the manifestation of the Wailing Echo.

The appearance of a Wailing Echo is distorted and ghostly, a shimmering and blurred reflection of what it once was in life. Its appearance is often accompanied by a cold breeze and is accompanied by a faint, sad moaning or crying. It is almost transparent and appears to be enveloped in a swirling fog of darkness and cold.

Wailing Echoes possess a unique and terrifying ability: They can create illusions of themselves that are so lifelike that they are hardly distinguishable from reality. They use these mirror images to confuse and distract their enemies, and then attack with dark, necromantic energy.

The attacks of the Wailing Echo take the form of dark bolts that bring damage and suffering to its enemies. Even if one attempts to hit it, it can sacrifice a mirror image to avoid the damage, and instead devastate the attacker with a psychic counterattack. At this moment, the Wailing Echo can swap places with one of the remaining mirror images, further confusing and deceiving its opponents.

The existence of a Wailing Echo is both a tragedy and a warning. It shows that even after death, conflicts and regrets can persist, and it reminds the living to settle their affairs and keep their promises before it's too late. Otherwise, they might end up as a Wailing Echo one day, trapped in eternal torment, unable to find the peace they so desperately seek.
